One of our missions at Prep Dig is to highlight as many teams and prospects as possible around the state, from State Championship contenders and household names to underdogs and special talents who might be flying under-the-radar.
We spend a lot of time at the gyms gathering information and watching matches and will use this space to highlight some of the teams and players we got to watch in person. This time we present you the Westfield Mustangs.
Westfield Mustangs
The team from the Westfield High School, situated in the region of Spring, competes in the 6A class and is part of the Region III – District 14. A very physical team, the Mustangs have obtained three wins in nine matches so far in the season under the leadership of five-year head coach Nova’Sha Stephenson.
Players to Watch:
Jala Anderson – Outside Hitter – Club: Houston Aces – 2022
Arguably the most technically-gifted player in the Mustangs roster, Jala Anderson impacts the entire team with her well-rounded game. She’s a key piece in the team’s passing and defensive system and is also its leading scorer at the net. Despite being just 5’3”, Anderson has tremendous leaping ability and is extremely creative and intelligent when it comes to finding solutions to score points. Her size might limited her future as an outside hitter, but she has what it takes to be a libero or a defensive specialist.
Dejane Holcomb – Middle Blocker – 2022
No player represents Westfield’s playing style better than Dejane Holcomb. Extremely physical and aggressive, this middle blocker has probably the heaviest arm in the entire team. Holcomb can jump really high and makes contact with the ball at a point that’s hard for opposing blockers to challenge her. An All-District honorable mention last season, she’s also a prolific server and a versatile hitter, who’s also able to score from the right or the left.
Michaela Rutledge – Middle Blocker – Club: Houston Aces – 2022
Another physical player who dominates the net for the Mustangs, Michaela Rutledge impresses for her athleticism. Despite standing at just 5’7”, she plays a lot taller than it due to her physically and jumping ability. Rutledge can hit the ball hard from anywhere at the net but one thing that stands out on her offense is her ability to recognize when a well-placed pokey or open-hand push will be more effective than a spike. She’s also got very good timing with her blocking.
