Continue ReadingAs we continue our midseason look at Nebraska’s 2021 high school season, it’s time to check back in on some stat leaders.
We’ve been tracking the state’s “stat stuffers” throughout the year, and we’ve got another good chance to highlight some dominant players as we reach the midway point of the season. Some of the names in this feature will be familiar, while others have made a rapid ascent up the leaderboard in the past few weeks. In any case, be sure to keep an eye on these athletes for the rest of the fall.
Grace Kremer Grace Kremer 6'0" | MB Skutt | 2022 State NE – 6’2 MB – Omaha Skutt Catholic [Class of 2022]
After the SkyHawks lost a ton of production from last year’s senior-laden team, someone needed to step up and fill the void. Kremer has done that and a lot more. This versatile attacker is hitting at nearly a .400 clip and will be influential in Skutt’s push for another state title.
Kali Jurgensmeier Kali Jurgensmeier 6'1" | MB Bishop Neumann | 2022 State NE – 6’1 OH – Bishop Neumann [Class of 2022]
You could use a lot of different superlatives to describe Jurgensmeier’s 2021 season so far. I’ll simply go with “dominant.” She has eclipsed six kills per set up to this point. It’s a mark seldom seen at any level.
Ellie Baumert Ellie Baumert 6'1" | S Malcolm | 2022 State #159 Nation NE – 6’2 S/OH – Howells-Dodge [Class of 2022]
This experienced senior captain has undoubtedly been the driving force behind Howells-Dodge’s success this year. Her ability to both attack and hit ensures that Baumert can impact every aspect of the Jaguars attack. She’ll do anything to win, and Howells-Dodge has certainly done plenty of winning already.
Addie Kirkegaard – 6’2 MB/RS – Hastings St. Cecilia [Class of 2022]
Before Kirkegaard takes her talents to Concordia next year, she has some unfinished business with Hastings St. Cecilia. She has managed to hit almost .350 on over four kills per set. That’s a leader you want to follow.
Karli Heidemann Karli Heidemann 6'1" | OH Diller-Odell | 2023 State #124 Nation NE – 6’0 OH – Diller-Odell [Class of 2023]
The Heidemanns have obviously contributed a lot to Diller-Odell over the past several years. This season, Karli has consistently been one of the most terminal attackers in the entire state. It’s been that way since the day her career started.
Wreece Liewer Wreece Liewer 6'0" | RS O’Neill | 2023 State NE – 6’0 OH – O’Neill [Class of 2023]
Liewer’s stock has risen a lot lately, and she’s continuing to demonstrate her improvement on the court. She’s already pitched in over 200 kills this year and is looking to keep on her forward trajectory in the coming weeks.
Mae Siegel Mae Siegel 5'9" | MB St. Patrick's | 2023 NE – 5’9 MB – North Platte St. Patrick’s [Class of 2023]
Siegel is another stock riser that we’ve been tracking lately. She has added an impressive arsenal of shots to her already-strong blocking presence at the net. Siegel will always be a leader in both phases of the game, so the value she brings to St. Patrick’s cannot be overstated.
Abby Wachal Abby Wachal 5'10" | OH Lincoln Lutheran | 2023 State NE – 5’10 OH – Lincoln Lutheran [Class of 2023]
Wachal continues to carry on the tradition of dominant outside hitters at Lincoln Lutheran. She terminates at such high efficiency, especially when you consider the volume she receives in every match. The Warriors will undoubtedly lean on their junior hitter as the postseason nears.
Lilly Swanson Lilly Swanson 5'8" | MB Diller-Odell | 2024 State NE – 5’8 OH/MB – Diller-Odell [Class of 2024]
Swanson is a key piece of a very balanced attack for Diller-Odell. The Griffins have gotten big contributions from a few underclassmen this year, and Swanson is one of those notable rising stars.
McKenna Plumbtree McKenna Plumbtree 6'0" | OH Fullerton | 2024 State NE – 6’1 MB – Fullerton [Class of 2024]
Plumbtree influences a match in any way she can. She posts big numbers in both kills and blocks, and her intangible leadership qualities make her a player to watch for the next couple of years.
JoLee Ryan JoLee Ryan 5'9" | OH Overton | 2024 State NE – 5’10 OH/MB – Overton [Class of 2024]
Ryan is a player that has been mentioned on this site before, and she just continues to light up the scoreboard for Overton this year.
