Private schools across the state are also filled with athletes that play at the highest level of the sport. We were able to watch some of these squads in action recently at the 2021 Houston Open, held at the facilities of the Houston Skyline Volleyball Club, and will bring our analysis on each of them and their most promising players over the next few weeks.
Awty Rams
The Rams play for the Awty International High School out of the Houston area. They’re preparing to compete in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), when they will play in the 6A Class – District 4. Head coach Jack Shaw has led the team to a sixth-place finish in the tournament, with two wins and three losses.
Players to Watch
Francie Thorez – Setter – 2023
Francie Thorez is a setter with a very solid all-around game. Besides coordinating the team’s offense with a great level of consistency, she also helps the team in other areas of the game, most notably with her dangerous serves and superior defending. At 5’9”, she also has good size and is not a liability at the net.
Tene Ariyo – Outside Hitter – Club: Houston Skyline – 2022
Tene Ariyo is Awty International’s most effective player at the net. A 5’9” outside hitter, she brings a lot of power to her offensive game with her impressive athleticism. Ariyo jumps high, has a powerful arm and the ability to tool the block when she’s not in the best position to hit. She’s also a very efficient blocker.
Elnaz Moradi – Defensive Specialist – 2023
Elnaz Moradi performs to perfection her role of elevating the Rams’ backcourt game when she’s on the court. A 5’1” defender, she’s extremely quick and technical and does what it takes to keep the ball up in the air. She also had a very positive influence on her teammates with her always positive attitude.
