Championship
Borgia takes the back-to-back home titles with a 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 win over St. Dominic. This was the second meeting between these two powerhouses, and Borgia has taken both meetings. The next meeting should be just as good as St. Dominic travels to Borgia on the 16th.
Tournament top performers
Elise Paul Elise Paul 6'0" | MB Lutheran South | 2023 State MO -Junior-Lutheran South
The 6’0 middle was a bright spot for Lutheran South. The hard-hitting middle guided her team throughout the tournament, and when she wasn’t in, you could see the difference in this team’s confidence. Elise is a quick middle with a hammer of an arm. With a little more help around her and Lutheran South could be dangerous.
CeCe Watts-Junior-Parkway West
For me, this is the type of player I want on my team. Emotional, excitable, plays excellent defense, and, for her 5’5 frame, has great success hitting on the front row. I enjoy CeCe’s passion and how she’s the first one off the floor celebrating her teammate’s success and the first one picking up her teammates after a mistake.
Alli Bishop-Junior-Westminster Christian
Pretty solid team all the way around but tends to struggle to terminate as consistent without Bishop in the game. The 6’1 lefty right-side hitter puts up a monster block and delivers a deadly line shot. Time and again, she was given the ball in crucial points of the games and delivered. With a little more time, I think Westminster will be a team to watch come playoffs.
Zoey Mitchell-Junior-Timberland
The combo right-side/setter is another hard-nosed player for the Wolves. She was a go-to hitter for them when she was in the front row and produced kill after kill. She delivers a great ball to the outside, and one mean jump serve.
Carly Glendinning Carly Glendinning 6'1" | OH Timberland | 2022 State #109 Nation MO -Senior-Timberland
The 6’2 six rotation outside is so fun to watch play. One of the players I was excited to watch, and she did not disappoint. She has excellent passing and defensive skills and could dent the floor with the ball. The passion she plays with is contagious, and you can see why she’s a D1 recruit.
Shae Pearson Shae Pearson 6'0" | RS Francis Howell | 2024 State MO -Sophomore-Francis Howell Central
Just like her older sister Shae will turn out to be a dynamite player. At 6’0, she delivers a mean attack on the outside for the Spartans. Give her another year of club ball, and she will be hard to stop on the outside. I really would have liked to see what she could do in the backcourt. Central is in good hands for the next couple of years.
Jordan Smith Jordan Smith 6'4" | OH Francis Howell Central | 2025 State #59 Nation MO -Freshman-Francis Howell Central
I was impressed with this kid’s game. Standing 6’2 with long arms and a nice vertical, a six rotation player didn’t come off the court all day long. Put’s up a monster block on the right-side and can thump the line on the right. Very impressed with her passing and defense. She will be a significant performer for the Spartans for the next four years.
Kayla Robertson-Sophomore-St. Dominic
Another player that impressed me was Kayla Robertson. Still a little raw, but you can see what she has in store in the next couple of years for St. Dominic. The 6’0 sophomore will develop into a monster middle for the Crusaders. Great length, wingspan, and lateral movements are what you want for a middle. Watching Kayla develop over the next couple of years will be a lot of fun.
Breanna Schreimann Breanna Schreimann 5'8" | OH St. Dominic | 2022 State MO -Senior-St. Dominic
I’ve written about Breanna before and again this time. With a cannon of an arm, vertical and hang time is so impressive to watch. Just elevates off the floor, hangs in the air to see where the hole is in the block or defense, and then slams it home. I would love to see her hit out of the back row but generally subbed out in the backcourt. The energy and excitement she provides, you can feel it when she crushes the ball—one of the top 4 outside hitters in the tournament.
One of ten seniors on this Borgia team makes a massive difference for the Knights out of the middle. Standing 6’1, she provides a monster block for the Knights. Not the most offensive middle, but she is a colossal presence blocking. She get’s her kills when given the ball, but the difference she makes on defense is what has Borgia 10-0. A Truman State basketball recruit.
Ella Brinkmann Ella Brinkmann 5'9" | OH St. Francis Borgia | 2022 State MO -Senior-Borgia
Volleyball IQ is off the charts and reminds me of Mizzou’s Carly Kan, short but mighty. The heart and soul of her team and you see when she plays, her skill level is extremely high. An undersized outside hitter at 5’8, but the vertical she has is impressive. Her knack for taking balls out of the system and scoring is her most impressive skill for her team. Time and again, I heard the crowd moan when she would deliver one of those out-of-system kills.
Annie Arand Annie Arand 5'8" | DS/L St. Francis Borgia | 2022 State MO -Senior-Borgia
Here’s my MVP pick for the tournament. One of those players that are so good at what she does makes it look like she’s not trying. Tight pass no problem dumps to the four position and scores. Pass off the net no problem delivers a beautiful bump set to the outside. She plays excellent defense and smart server and runs a quick offense, moving her hitters all over the court. Over and over again, she puts her hitters in a position to be successful. Borgia’s not 10-0 without Arand.
