The first week of competition will bring a handful of can’t-miss matches and as we understand it’s a lot to process, especially with two seasons separated by just a few months, between now and next Wednesday we’ll recommend one match for you to follow every day, highlighting the teams involved and their most exciting prospects.
If you’re in the area on Saturday, September 4, this is the match you don’t want to miss:
Sunnyside vs Selah – 1.00pm
The Grizzlies from Sunnyside had a positive 2020 campaign in the last, shortened season as the team won five of its seven matches. District’s Coach of the Year Erin Koerner will certainly miss graduated 4A Columbia Basin Big-9′ MVP Kaycee Adams, but with the core of the team back, she should be able to lead the Grizzlies to another solid campaign.
The Vikings from Selah were even strong a few months ago, prevailing in seven of their nine matches. The team coached by Becky Gause will be looking to dominate the 2A Central Washington Athletic Conference once again despite the departure of a couple seniors, most notably team captain and defensive specialist Addie Scott.
Players to Watch – Sunnyside
Alyna Ramirez -Middle Blocker – 2022
Alyna Ramirez had a solid season with the Grizzlies a few months ago as she made it to the District’s first team. A six-footer, the middle blocker gets to actively impact the game at the net with her offense and blocking, but is also a capable defender, contributing in several different areas for Sunnyside’s success. She can also play as a right-side hitter if needed.
Jansyn Carrizales – Setter – 2022
Promoted to the starting setter position last season, Jansyn Carrizales delivered strongly enough to earn an all-district first-team nomination. The 5’6” playmaker does a great job in connecting with her hitters and feeding them with solid sets across the net. Carrizales also plays great defense and has a central role in keeping the team cohesive and focuses as one of the captains.
Players to Watch – Selah
Taylor Kieser – Setter/Right Sider – Club: Central Region United – 2023
One of nine Washington athletes recently named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2021 Phenom Watch List, Taylor Kieser is a jack-of-all-trades for Selah. The 5’11” prospects excels as both a setter of a right-side hitter for the Vikings, having a major impact in the team’s success on a volleyball court. Long, athletic and technically-skilled, Kieser, who also an excellent server, has a bright future in either position due to that combination.
Ryenne Howell – Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter – Club: Team Yakima – 2022
Another versatile prospect who can play multiple positions, Ryenne Howell is mostly used in the middle for the Vikings, even though she typically lines up as an outside hitter for her club Team Yakima. Two things that allow her to seamlessly transition between two entirely different positions are her 5’11” frame and her all-around game. Howell is a threat from the middle, where she gets to impact the game with her excellent blocking too, but offers an interesting level of reliability when placed at the pin.
