Is it the end of an era at Southern?
When you think of the Shore Conference and even NJ volleyball in general as it comes to the best teams. Southern would be at the top of both lists but this year has been nothing short of a struggle. The squad is presently on a four-match losing streak and seemingly struggling to find answers. It is early on in the season and plenty of time to turn things around but the loss of Soares and Pharo, who were two of the best in the state, has created some uncertainty.
Can the likes of rising sophomores Jordyn Hamlin and Molly Regulski take over the reigns? Without question the talent is there but is it just too soon. Only time will tell.
Expect conferences to be based off Win Percentage
As many have anticipated including myself, COVID-19 will unfortunately not allow teams to play the same number of conference games for us to get a true gauge of who will be regular-season champions. The disparity in matches in several conferences is already great with some teams nearing double-digits in overall matches while others have only played several. Tournaments do play a role as well but it seems it will be extremely difficult for it work out in our favor.
Dominance at the Top of Conferences
Lastly, some play has raised eyebrows with familiar faces and even some new ones by how dominant teams have been. In three conferences alone, there are at least four squads each where they have yet to drop a set: BCSL, Big North and NJIC. Yes, these conferences are on the larger side in regards to number of teams but that does not discredit the quality of play. Especially when you see new names like Burlington Township, River Dell, and St. Mary (Rutherford).
This only demonstrates how the quality of volleyball in the state of New Jersey continues to rise and the quality was already at a very-high clip.
