Here are the top five teams according to indianaprepvolleyball.com and their respective top players. Many thanks to Zach McCrite for putting these rankings together.
#5: Covenant Christian (5-4)
Scheduling is a trap. If you schedule too easy, you have a bloated schedule of wins, but have no development of your program. If you’re playing teams too far above your level, your players become dejected and don’t WANT to develop. The Warriors are in the “baby bear” zone of scheduling; some matches they are expected to win, some are definitely teams that are tough, but will prep them for a long run in October. I’m especially fond of Dani Newport (’23, 5-9 OH), whose four kills per set and primary passing abilities will have her playing well into October regularly.
#4: North Decatur (8-2)
Not normally known as a “volleyball school”, the Chargers already have a marquis win over 4A Columbus North earlier this season. Another primary passing outside, Caroline Stapp (’23, 5-9 OH) leads the way with nearly four kills per set, and is tops in digs. She should never come out for the remainder of her career at ND, so here’s to hoping that she gets some help along the way for a deep October run.
#3: Illiana Christian (12-3)
The Vikings are the first of three teams from northern Indiana making this list. With a schedule including Indiana, Michigan and Illinois squads, this is a well-rounded team that has its highlights and should be a factor in a month. Converted defensive specialist Mia Doorn (’22, 5-8 OH) will play in the back row at the next level. For now, though, she’s hammering away at the competition at a four kill, .300+ pace.
#2: Hammond Bishop Noll (6-6)
Another squad from “up north”, the Warriors are extremely young and play multiple freshman night in and night out. Their very tough schedule includes 4A powers Munster and Penn, as well as solid teams from Illinois. My favorite of this young bunch is Sophia Pelton Sophia Pelton 5'9" | OH Hammond Bishop Noll | 2025 State IN (’25, 5-9 OH), a primary passing outside who fills a stat sheet regularly. She leads the Warriors in kills and aces, and is third in digs and blocks. Her future is very bright.
#1: Andrean (13-1)
There’s always that team that has just a little more than the others, and the Fighting 59ers are showing it off every match. With wins over 1A #5 Lafayette Central Catholic and 4A North Central (Indianapolis), the scheduling hits keep on coming as a showdown with 4A Munster looms on Tuesday the 7th. The three-headed monster from Andrean is led by senior Angelina Majchrowicz Angelina Majchrowicz 6'0" | OH Andrean | 2022 State IN (’22, 5-9 OH) and sophomore Marin Sanchez Marin Sanchez 5'10" | OH Andrean | 2024 State IN (’24, 5-8 OH). Both are primary passing outsides and should project to do exactly that at the next level. Angelina has a whip of an arm, while Marin plays with a little more “volleyball acuity”. Both combine for seven kills per set while hitting over .300 collectively. The third “monster” in this group? None other than Maddie Kmetz Maddie Kmetz 5'9" | S Andrean | 2022 State IN (’22, 5-9 S), who has seemingly started since she arrived on campus. She runs the 5-1 offense to perfection and is lethal behind the baseline, adding an ace per set for her team.
