On to the rundown.
Five-Set Thrillers
We saw a few intense five-set battles between elite teams throughout the state.
It all started Tuesday night in the marquee matchup between Elkhorn South and Norris. This Class A versus Class B duel was expected to be a barnburner, and it certainly delivered. The home-standing Storm jumped out to a 2-1 lead before the Titans mounted a massive rally to win in a tiebreaker. Nebraska commit Maisie Boesiger Maisie Boesiger 5'5" | S Norris | 2022 State #198 Nation NE keyed up a massive serving run at the beginning of the fourth set to swing momentum in Norris’ favor. Gracie Kircher Gracie Kircher 5'11" | OH Norris | 2023 State NE led the Norris attack on the outside with a huge 22-kill performance.
Elkhorn South was not done with five-set contests as they traveled to play Class A rival Papillion-La Vista. This time, it was the Monarchs who stormed back from 2-1 to take a narrow five-set win over the defending champs. Thankfully, if there’s any team resilient enough to bounce back from some very close defeats, it’s Elkhorn South.
We had another top-tier contest go the distance Thursday night. Lincoln Southwest hosted Omaha Westside for another great matchup between Class A foes. After dropping the first two sets by razor-thin margins, the Silver Hawks came all the way back to force a fifth. The deciding set was a back-and-forth affair that eventually ended with a 16-14 score in favor of the home team. Fresno State-bound senior Shaylee Myers Shaylee Myers 6'0" | OH Lincoln Southwest | 2022 State #199 Nation NE posted one of the best stat lines of the year so far: 30 kills on .439 hitting for Southwest.
This wasn’t the only match that went the distance for Omaha Westside, either. The Warriors fought valiantly with Gretna on Tuesday night but dropped a 20-18 heartbreaker in the fifth set. Despite the defeats, Westside has already proven it’s capable of hanging with the best in the state.
Notable Triangulars
There are plenty of trios that had some standout moments already this week. Here are some of the quick hitters:
Bridgeport scored two wins on Tuesday against Kimball and Garden County. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 on the year and have another full slate of matches scheduled for Saturday morning.
Freeman is on a bit of a hot streak now, as the Falcons picked up decisive victories over Wilbur-Clatonia and Johnson County Central this week.
Howells-Dodge triumphed over Pender and Tri County Northeast in triangular action this week. A big test awaits the Jaguars this Saturday: 7-0 Elkhorn Valley.
Other Big Results
We’re not done with the quick hitters. Here are some other results in key matchups around the Cornhusker State:
- Omaha Marian had an inter-state contest against Des Moines Dowling this week. The Iowa squad got the better of the Crusaders this time, but you can start to see the young talent coming together for Marian. They’re going to keep improving.
- Waverly earned a pivotal home sweep over Elkhorn North Thursday night. The Vikings are finding their footing in Class B after an early-season slate full of strong opponents.
- Superior was victorious in an intense battle with BDS that went all the way to a fifth set. These two small-town powerhouses will surely have a say in which team wins their respective classes this year.
