There’s a great variety of matchups to discuss. We had some annual tournaments that always generate quality volleyball, and there were also some one-off matchups with big implications for the wildcard standings.
Let’s take a look at some highlights!
Allison Weston Invitational
The Allison Weston Invitational provided another opportunity for perennial title contenders to test themselves against the state’s best.
Papillion-La Vista South is still undefeated. What’s new? The Titans took care of business again with wins over Lincoln East, Burke, Millard West, and tournament runner-up Lincoln Southwest.
It was a great weekend for the Silver Hawks, too. Southwest’s journey to the title match included wins over Duchesne, Omaha Westside, and Millard West. There’s a huge group of teams atop Class A that could defeat each other on any given day. Good luck filling out your tournament brackets this November.
Elsewhere in the invitational, there was a handful of close matchups that went the distance before a winner was determined. Millard West and Papillion-La Vista had a three-set battle before the Wildcats emerged with the victory. Lincoln East came out on top in a back-and-forth match with Omaha Burke.
Overall, these tournament results serve as another reminder of how even some of the state’s top teams really are.
Lincoln Pius X Invitational
On to the Lincoln Pius X Invitational, which usually ends up with a good amount of parity. This year’s iteration was no different.
Every team at the event ended up with at least one win, and nobody escaped undefeated. That, in itself, might be enough to summarize that parity.
Elkhorn North scored the upset of the tournament with a three-set victory over Norris. The young Wolves continue to improve as time goes on and are challenging some of the state’s strongest foes. Their flashes of brilliance will get more consistent with more experience.
In the end, though, Norris emerged with another invitational championship. The Titans, like the host Thunderbolts, ended with a 4-1 record. The Class B leaders held a head-to-head advantage after beating Pius in two sets.
Other Results
Time for the quick hitters on other big results from around the Cornhusker State.
- Grand Island Central Catholic defended its undefeated record against Cozad, Hastings St. Cecilia, and Holdrege on Saturday. Meanwhile, St. Cecilia picked up a pair of quality wins against McCook and Scottsbluff.
- Waverly handed Columbus Lakeview its first loss of the season in a battle of the Vikings. The Waverly Vikings won in a 2-1 decision and added a victory over Sidney. Lakeview still had a solid showing over the weekend, as the (Lakeview) Vikings notched wins over Aurora and Bennington.
- One of the biggest small-town results of the weekend was Clarkson/Leigh‘s win over Mead. Both sets of the best-of-three went deuce before the Patriots took the 2-0 sweep. Keep shuffling those standings.
