#5: Roncalli (17-3)
Previous Ranking: #4
With a conference loss to 3A #2 Brebeuf, this ranking is short-lived for these Royals. However, for now, we keep them here because of their recent victory over Mount Vernon (Fortville) and their tough strength of schedule. A small break in the schedule should account for three wins (Perry Meridian, Southport and Heritage Christian), leading up to a October 5 match at Brownsburg. My personal favorite on this roster is freshman Logan Bell Logan Bell 5'11" | OH Roncalli | 2025 State #24 Nation IN (’25, 5-10 OH), who continues to be a primary-passing six-rotation player that is indispensable in all facets of the game.
#4: Munster (18-3)
Previous Ranking: NR
Welcome to the party, Mustangs! Finally recognized for their hard-fought wins and tough schedule, Munster hasn’t lost since the last Saturday in August, currently riding a ten-match winning streak. Leading the Northwest Crossroads Conference, the Mustangs have a tough one coming up on October 2 at power McCutcheon. Should be a nice tune-up before the postseason. Senior outside Haley Melby Haley Melby 6'1" | OH Munster | 2022 State #93 Nation IN (’22, 6-1 OH, Iowa commit) is averaging over six kills per set while hitting near .500 on the season.
#3: Hamilton Southeastern (13-2)
Previous Ranking: #5
The Hoosier Crossroads Conference leader at 4-0, these Royals have an even better thirteen-match winning streak, which includes wins over Yorktown, Fishers, Brownsburg, Providence—you name the school, and the Royals have already played them. The only other match that might give them fits this season is 3A #5 Wapahani next Monday, but the conference title is all but theirs. Of the multitude of offensive weapons on this squad, Avery Hobson Avery Hobson 6'1" | OH Hamilton Southeastern | 2023 State IN (’23, 5-11 OH) continues to pound away at the competition from the left pin, averaging over three kills per set while hitting north of .400.
#2: Yorktown (13-3)
Previous Ranking: NR
I hesitated to put the Tigers in this group for one reason only—reputation. It’s hard for me to leave them out for too long, no matter who is wearing the jerseys. Back-to-back five-set losses to Brownsburg and 4A #3 HSE prove that there’s no clear-cut leader of the 4A pack. A match tonight hosting 3A power Muncie Burris should either keep the Tigers in the top five, or change the trajectory of this year’s group. Charlotte Vinson Charlotte Vinson 6'1" | OH Yorktown | 2025 State #21 Nation IN (’25, 6-1 S/OH) is the physical and statistical leader in so many ways for this roster, and the Tigers can only go as far as Miss Vinson can go.
#1: Penn (17-0)
Previous Ranking: #1
A set each to Warsaw, McCutcheon and Munster. Question: to whom have the Kingsmen lost sets this fall? That’s it. They keep winning, and if my memory serves me well, they might be the last undefeated squad in the state. A match hosting Munster to end the regular season is an excellent way to ready themselves for a postseason run that should go further than last year’s season. There are so many kids to mention on this squad, but if I had to pick one, I’ll take spitfire Emma Hickey Emma Hickey 5'7" | DS/L Penn | 2022 State IN (’22, 5-7 OH/DS), who projects to be a DS at the next level even though she leads the team in kills. Her leadership, both physically and vocally, has done so much for this squad that it’s hard to believe they’ll receive anything less than a shot at the title.
