Since the season started, we’ve run series highlighting the players who are standing out in Washington separating them by division, class or position. Now, with two months of play in the books, we’ll start being a little bit more specific, and give a shoutout to some prospects who barely missed the cut on those first pieces.
We’ll start by pointing out three setters who are doing a fantastic job with their teams in the 1A Division:
Samantha Farland – HS: Castle Rock – 2023
Castle Rock is one of the few undefeated teams in the state and Samantha Farland is a big part of their success. The 5’7” setter has been doing a tremendous job in her third year of high school volleyball and playing a center role in the team’s diversified offense with a solid distribution, which generated 289 assists (6.7 per set) for the Rockets. She also tallied 71 digs, 20 kills and 13 aces.
Zoe Smith – HS: Bear Creek – Club: Northwest Juniors – 2022
One of the captains of Bear Creek, Zoe Smith is going above and beyond to set the example in her last year of high school volleyball. The 5’6” setter has been a stud for the Grizzlies, leading the team in assists with 298 (4.9 per set) but has also offered massive contribution in other areas, ranking first in aces (69), second in digs (114) and third in kills (59).
Natalie O’Neil – HS: King’s Way Christian – 2024
The youngest of the three, Natalie O’Neil has been performing as well as any other setter in the state ahead of King’s Way Christian. The second-year setter has quickly grown into a pivotal role with the Lady Knights, most notably running their offense with 255 assists (6.9 per set). She has also produced well on defense (58 digs), from the service line (26 aces) and even on offense (11 kills).
