Continue ReadingLiberty North is looking for a repeat. Nixa, Borgia, and St. Dominic are looking to make repeat trips to Cape, but several title contenders seek to knock off the Eagles. With one district consisting of 3 top 10 teams. Class 5 should be a fun class to watch who makes the final four.
1. Liberty North 29-3
The state of Kansas has been rough on the defending Missouri Class 5 champions. With all three losses coming from teams in the Sunflower State. Liberty North will need to beat crosstown rival Liberty for the third time to escape districts, but it shouldn’t be a problem.
2. Lafayette 30-4-1
Lafayette gets the nob after going down to Ozark and winning the stacked tournament. The Lancers are in a district with two teams that have defeated them this season. Eureka and Borgia are both 1 and 2 in district seeds because of the 5 set defeats they handed the Lancers. But they are also a team that took national ranked Skutt Catholic, NE to 5.
3. Nixa 28-4
Lafayette handed Nixa two of the four losses, and the other two have come to Arkansas powers Har-Ber and Fayetteville. Not a team to shy away from top-level competition, Nixa is a battle-tested team. They must knock off Kickapoo to win districts, but they already own two wins over the Chiefs.
4. Liberty 25-4
Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they are in a district with defending state champion Liberty North. Liberty has beaten Eureka and lost to Lafayette, St. Thomas Aquinas, KS, and Liberty North twice. In another district, Liberty would be favored to win. Imagine the team the town of Liberty would have if not split into two power programs.
5. Eureka 29-3
Seed first in their district because of wins over both Lafayette and Borgia. They started the year 27-0 but lost 3 of the last 6. Wildcats should breeze into the district final, and the wins over Borgia and Lafayette helped them avoid the semifinal death match with one of them.
6. Borgia 30-4
The third-place Class 5 from last year is in the Eureka and Lafayette district. Borgia lost to Eureka 0-3 but beat Lafayette 3-2. Borgia also played in the Ozark tournament but came out with two L’s that pushed them down in the final season rankings.
7. Kickapoo 25-7
Earlier in the year, the win over Rock Bridge gives Kickapoo one up on Rock Bridge in the rankings. Four of the defeats have come to Arkansas powers, Nixa (twice) and Liberty North. Kickapoo will need to knock off Nixa in a third meeting this year to win districts and advance.
8. Rock Bridge 30-4
They started the season 2-3 after the first weekend of play but have gone on a tear to end the year. The one signature win for the Bruins was over Illinois power Mater Dei 3-1, and the same day they lost to Borgia 3-0.
9. Cor Jesu 17-5-3
The Chargers have won the last 12 matches to end the year and go into districts on fire, and losses have come from Nixa, Lafayette, Borgia, St. Josephs Academy, and Eureka. So not a bad group of teams to suffer L’s. To win districts again, they must get past a pesky Oakville team.
10. Lee’s Summit West 20-9
Liberty (twice), Liberty North (twice), St. Teresa’s Academy, Fayetteville, AR, Shawnee Mission NW, KS, Blue Valley North, KS, and Blue Springs the Kansas City power is having a down year considering the record. Still, those nine losses have come to some stiff competition. To get out of districts, the Titans must beat St. Teresa’s Academy.
