Of course, Class A’s district format works a bit differently, so we’ll discuss their results in the context of districts rather than sub-districts. I’m looking forward to seeing a bracket released and for the Class A district winners to show out in Lincoln!
For Class B, the protocol is the same as the other sub-districts we’ve discussed lately. We’ll be breaking down some of the big winners in Class B’s sub-districts before we dive into some district finals! The grind never stops.
Now, time for the recap.
Class A
Top seeds stole the show in Class A districts. A clean sweep!
Papillion-La Vista South swept through A-1 and looks every bit like the championship frontrunner that we’ve seen all year. If someone’s going to knock off the Titans, they’d have to hand Papio South their first loss of 2021 in Lincoln.
Millard West and Lincoln Southwest found identical success in A-2 and A-3, respectively. The two squads fought in the top three of the Class A wildcard race all year, and now they’ve got a chance to prove themselves in the state tournament.
Elkhorn South took care of business in A-7 with a pair of sweeps. The defending champs aren’t going away anytime soon, and they have the talent to make a big push.
Gretna won a hard-fought four-set match against Bellevue West to take the A-5 crown. The same can be said of Papillion-La Vista‘s win over Lincoln Pius X in A-6.
Lastly, we find our tournament double-dip in A-7. Omaha Westside picked up a big sweep over Fremont in the district final, but the Tigers will join the Warriors in Lincoln as the eighth Class A entrant on wildcard points. What a breakthrough for both squads.
Class B
We now venture into Class B, where standard sub-district and reseeding rules apply.
The lone non-top seed to emerge victoriously was Omaha Duchesne in B-1. The second-seeded Cardinals have become a mainstay at the Class B tournament lately, and they moved one step closer with a sweep over Mercy.
Omaha Skutt swept through B-2. This strong sub-district will bring all four teams to the re-seeded district finals; Elkhorn North, Elkhorn, and Bennington will join the SkyHawks for district final action.
Norris prevailed in B-3 following a gritty four-set match with Waverly, a team that should also loom large in district finals.
Blair came out on top in the three-team B-4 bracket after battling Schuyler for a district final bid.
York looked sharp in their back-to-back sweeps to take B-5. The sub-district runner-up, Seward, also hopes to secure their trip to Lincoln with a win in the district finals.
Grand Island Northwest seems ready for another state appearance. The Vikings didn’t drop a set en route to a B-6 title. Adams Central and Aurora will also slot into the district final race from this bracket.
Lexington was triumphant in B-7 after a one-and-done matchup with Holdrege. This team is poised for the tough district finals test that awaits.
Finally, we arrive at B-8, where Sidney defended their home court with two thrilling five-set wins over Gering and panhandle rival Scottsbluff. That do-or-die excitement is what makes postseason volleyball so special.
