Today’s subject: 2023s. We already discussed some juniors in our outside hitter breakdown, so be sure to check it out. Now, though, we’re taking a tour across all the teams and identifying more standout 2023s.
Let’s do it.
Olivia Lasee Olivia Lasee 6'3" | MB Appleton North | 2023 State WI – 6’2 MB – Appleton North
Lasee is a middle blocker who is always available to terminate in front of the setter. Her imposing length and lateral quickness help make her a force both offensively and defensively. With the well-rounded attack that the Lightning brought to Omaha, it was always tough for opposing blockers to know where to focus most of their efforts. Lasee takes advantage of that, and she’ll do the same for Lehigh University in 2023.
Isabella Stockwood – 5’8 DS/L – St. Teresa’s Academy
Stockwood can effectively patrol any area of the backcourt, but middle back is definitely her favorite domain. She is so reliable in picking up balls in zone six and consistently places her digs right on target to the setter. Stockwood is no stranger to high-level volleyball and will continue to showcase her skills in the upcoming club season, too.
Makenzie Dyrstad Makenzie Dyrstad 5'7" | DS/L Papillion LaVista South | 2023 State NE – 5’7 DS/L – Papillion-La Vista South
Dyrstad is another stellar defensive specialist who stole the show on Saturday. Outstanding ball control has been a crucial part of Papio South’s success this season, and Dyrstad is a vital contributor to that phase of the game. The Rutgers-bound defender works in tandem with fellow Big Ten-bound libero Harlei Cole Harlei Cole 5'6" | DS/L Papillion-La Vista South | 2022 State NE to produce perfect passes time after time. As long as the Titans have their impenetrable backcourt, there are very few ways to slow them down.
Ivy Leuck Ivy Leuck 5'8" | S Skutt Catholic | 2023 State NE – 5’9 OH/RS – Omaha Skutt
I’ve mentioned the versatility of Omaha Skutt’s roster before, and Leuck is another big part of that equation. She has demonstrated her ability to be a standout setter or opposite hitter. Anything to help her team win. Leuck also has the defensive skills in right back that come with being an experienced setter/opposite, and Skutt will happily let her lock down a big chunk of the backcourt. Whatever position Leuck occupies moving forward, she’s bound to find success.
Reagan Anderson – 5’3 DS/L – Saint Thomas Aquinas
Anderson has played on big stages before. She was not intimidated by the big, physical hitters that she saw across the net on Saturday. This talented libero played incredibly low to the court and has a great feel for how to adjust her platform to deliver the ball to her setter. Anderson is a natural leader who will take her all-around game to Wichita State in a couple of years.
Anna Sis Anna Sis 5'11" | OH Papillion-La Vista | 2023 State NE – 6’0 OH/RS – Papillion-La Vista
The Sis name continues to produce memorable matches for Papillion-La Vista. Anna can terminate on either pin and is undoubtedly a go-to hitter for the Monarchs. Her dominance is not limited to the high school game, either, and I’m excited to see Sis’ continued improvement in next year’s club slate.
Brenna Gion – 5’11 MB – West Des Moines Valley
Gion has been an important anchor to the West Des Moines Valley block for a while now. Her extensive on-court experience allows her to make the right reads and key in on the hot hitter. She provided some sparks on offense last Saturday and will continue to progress as Valley looks toward the postseason.
