1. Washburn Rural (Kansas 6A 20-0) Previously: 2
With Aquinas dropping a tough one to Liberty North, we have moved Rural up to the top spot. Yes, we know they are in Topeka and not technically KC but we like they play a lot of Kansas City teams. Also, I can get to their school in the same amount of time it takes me to get to Gardner or Raymore, so there’s that.
2. Liberty North (Missouri Class 5 20-2) Previously: 3
North avenged one of their losses, taking down St. Thomas Aquinas in the Blue Springs South tournament. Even though the two teams have split, we went with the recent match to decide placement. They could really be 2A and 2B. Isabel Zimmerman Isabel Zimmerman 6'2" | RS Liberty North | 2022 State #30 Nation MO went smooth off in the championship match.
3. St. Thomas Aquinas (Kansas 5A 27-2) Previously: 1
They dropped one match and you can read our thoughts above about the rankings. The team got great balance from their hitters in Ava Martin Ava Martin 5'10" | S Bishop Miege | 2024 State #77 Nation KS , Alea Goolsby Alea Goolsby 5'11" | OH St. Thomas Aquinas | 2025 State #36 Nation KS , and Tatum Grimes Tatum Grimes 6'2" | MB St. Thomas Aquinas | 2024 State #184 Nation KS to name a few. They are still a dangerous team who is our early October clubhouse leader to bring home the title…but our number four team may have something to say about that.
4. Lansing (Kansas 5A 24-1) Previously: 5
Make it 24 in a row now for Lansing after capturing another title in Spring Hill. This team has all the pieces to be in the conversation for a 5A title with St. Thomas Aquinas.
5. Blue Valley North (Kansas 6A 22-2) Previously: 6
Blue Valley North, winner of the Janice Van Gorp title moves into the top 5. They are playing great volleyball and will try to keep their momentum throughout the month of October.
6. Liberty (Missouri Class 5 16-2) Previously: 4
Liberty is steady in the polls after picking up a couple of more victories this week. We moved other teams up due to their weekend tournament success but Liberty will continue to be in the conversation and we look forward to their big showdown this week with Liberty North for a shot at sharing a conference title at the minimum.
7. Mill Valley (Kansas 5A 19-5) Previously: 8
A strong tournament run as Mill Valley moving up a couple of slots this week. They have some big wins on the year and making a case in being a championship contender in Kansas 5A.
8. St. James Academy (Kansas 5A 15-7) Previously: 7
St. James is still a sleeping giant and will be in 5A conversation. They have played a tough schedule and it will pay off down the backstretch of their schedule.
9. Shawnee Mission Northwest (Kansas 6A 27-6) Previously: 9
Shawnee Mission Northwest went 6-2 last week, with one of those defeats coming to Mill Valley. They will see Lawrence Free State this week, which follows them in the rankings.
10. Lawrence Free State (Kansas 6A 15-5) Previously: NR
Lawrence Free State is making their debut this week after being one of the teams on the outside looking in last week. Free State had a strong showing at the Shawnee Mission Northwest tournament. Their sole loss came to Mill Valley in bracket play.
11. Heritage Christian Academy (Kansas 3A 23-2) Previously: 13
We were very impressed with HCA last weekend. Even though they dropped their first two matches of the year, they more than held their own. I’m putting it on paper now, they will win Kansas 3A.
12. St. Pius (Missouri Class 4 13-2-2) Previously: 12
Pius did suffer a loss to St. Teresa’s Academy, a strong team despite their record. They also went and beat Excelsior Springs in 3 and Lafayette in 4.
13. Grain Valley (Missouri Class 5 17-3) Previously: 14
Grain Valley was perfect last week, picking up a few more wins. They should breeze through the remainder of their conference schedule but will this serve them well for the playoffs?
14. Baldwin (Kansas 4A 23-3) Previously: 15
Baldwin is still winning games and has three matches this week. Their next true test though may not be until next week when they face Spring Hill.
15. Platte County (Missouri Class 5 19-8) Previously: NR
Platte County is having a dominating run through their conference schedule and makes a leap into our Power rankings this week. Like Grain Valley, their weak conference schedule may prove costly when district play arrives.
Outside Looking In; Olathe Northwest (15-7), Smithville (18-4-3), Blue Valley West (15-7)
