Let’s begin with the Class C1 and C2 results. Not everything in Class A and B is resolved yet (more matches happening today!), so we’ll leave those for later. With that in mind, here are some of the storylines and big winners from sub-districts from C1 and C2!
Class C1
Many number one seeds did an excellent job of defending their position at the top.
In Class C1, almost all of the #1s advanced through their respective sub-districts. Syracuse looked particularly dominant in C1-2, as the Rockets swept through their bracket and did plenty to back up their 27-1 regular-season record. Lincoln Lutheran accomplished the same feat in C1-4, as did Pierce in C1-7. Bishop Neumann also managed to string together back-to-back sweeps, including a convincing victory over last year’s C1 champion, Wahoo. Making a sub-district run without a single set loss is a tough feat, so these teams are already demonstrating their postseason readiness.
Many other top seeds prevailed after some firm resistance. Grand Island Central Catholic won a competitive sub-district final against defending C1 runner-up, St. Paul. Omaha Roncalli won in four sets against Omaha Gross to emerge as the C1-1 champion. Meanwhile, Chase County gutted out two five-set victories to take the title in C1-12. Two other sub-district finals also went the distance; Kearney Catholic defeated Gothenburg to claim C1-10, and North Bend Central won a tiebreaker with Logan View/Scribner-Snyder in C1-6. A cross-town rivalry match went to Columbus Lakeview as the Vikings took the C1-8 crown.
Two C1 sub-districts were won by two-seeded underdogs. Fairbury came out hot in C1-3 and swept Falls City to emerge as the top team in the group. In C1-11, Ord battle host Ainsworth and won in a five-set thriller. This is all part of the postseason grind.
Class C2
It’s a similar story in Class C2, with almost every top seed winning their sub-district punching their ticket into district finals. These journies weren’t easy, though.
Amherst looked strong as they swept their way through to the C2-10 title. Bayard, Oakland-Craig, Crofton, and Yutan did the same in their respective districts. These teams have not slowed down from their stellar regular seasons and already look like surefire title contenders. Let’s see if any upcoming challengers can finally take a set from these squads.
Burwell dropped a set in their opening-round matchup before sweeping West Holt to win C2-9. Bridgeport prevailed in four sets over Perkins County to take care of business in C2-11, and Hastings St. Cecilia carved the same path to win C2-8.
For other top seeds, resistance was stiff. Palmyra survived a five-set slugfest with Centennial to prevail in C2-3. Wisner-Pilger also won a tiebreaker in the C2-4 sub-district finals.
The match of the night, though, was probably Norfolk Catholic‘s 3-2 triumph over Lutheran High Northeast in the C2-7 finals. In a rematch of the 2020 Class C2 championship match, it was last year’s runner-up that emerged victoriously.
That leaves one Class C2 sub-district that was not won by a top seed. In C2-6, third-seeded Sutton managed to upend Thayer Central in the semifinals and took down host Superior in a five-set thriller. That’s an accomplishment that will have the Mustangs riding high as they look to surge their way into the state championships.
