Whatever the case may be, all of these 2022s have recently wrapped up their high school playing days. Some players in this class will give us plenty more thrills in the upcoming club season, but we can officially get a full retrospective look at their time with their respective schools.
Nebraska’s Class of 2022 clearly left an indelible mark on the state’s high school scene. That’s reflected in the players you see in these rankings.
Start at the top. Bekka Allick Bekka Allick 6'3" | MB Waverly | 2022 State #7 Nation NE went out swinging with a 30-plus-kill performance against Omaha Skutt in the Class B semifinals this fall. It takes a true top performer to end a high school career with that kind of stat line, and she’s number one for a reason.
Speaking of Omaha Skutt, setter Abby Schomers Abby Schomers 6'0" | S Skutt Catholic | 2022 State #94 Nation NE rockets up the rankings after her series of spectacular matches that helped lift the SkyHawks to another state title this year. The 2021 state tournament was undoubtedly one of the finest moments of her career.
Mya Larson Mya Larson 5'11" | OH Wahoo | 2022 State #168 Nation NE ‘s accomplishments cannot go without mention here. Her 2000-kill career was one for the ages, and she will always be a legend in Wahoo lore.
I keep scrolling down these rankings and marveling at the depth of this class in Nebraska. Bailey Helzer Bailey Helzer 5'11" | OH Oakland-Craig | 2022 State NE made a big jump in the hierarchy after she helped Oakland-Craig to a historic state championship. It was an unprecedented feat for the school’s volleyball program, and players like Helzer are often the reason why teams are able to have that breakthrough moment.
Kate Galvin Kate Galvin 5'7" | DS/L Millard North | 2022 State NE is another one of the stock risers in this rankings update that I enjoyed watching this year. The San Diego commit was an indispensable anchor in the Millard North backcourt, and her uncanny ability to impact a match should fit in well with the Toreros.
Another athlete that I’d like to mention here is Sadie Millard Sadie Millard 5'9" | MB Millard West | 2022 State NE . This Millard West middle blocker gave us plenty of highlight moments, including playing in a six-rotation role for much of her career. She is moving on to compete in track and field for Wichita State, which is a testament to her all-around ability to succeed in any competition.
I can’t help but notice all the stock risers in these 2022 rankings that made a huge impression at the state tournament this year. Erison Vonderschmidt Erison Vonderschmidt 6'0" | RS Falls City Sacred Heart | 2022 State NE went out on top after an incredible run of matches in Lincoln. Even with the pressure of the championship match, Vonderschmidt remained unstoppable.
Brianna Lemke Brianna Lemke 6'0" | MB Mead | 2022 State NE is worth mention here. She was an incredibly physical hitter for Mead and was a big factor in helping that program reach a high seed for the postseason.
Meanwhile, small-town talents like Lily Vollertsen Lily Vollertsen 6'0" | OH Syracuse | 2022 State NE and Lilly Rowe Lilly Rowe 5'9" | OH Columbus Lakeview | 2022 State NE made a huge impression on me as they wrapped up their high school careers this fall. It’s irrefutable proof that high-caliber athletes exist throughout the state, not just in the big metros.
In all, this group provided the excitement and talent that makes our coverage fun. Thanks, Class of 2022.
