Continue ReadingIt is that time of the year where we here at Prep Dig update our class rankings! This edition brings you the class of 2023. Our top 10 stayed consistent except for some jockeying by a few players. . We had little change among the top, with Kentucky-bound Brooke DeLeye still rated as our top prospect following a dominating junior campaign.
This isn’t an easy process and players get missed. Our friend at Prep Dig, Chris Fitzgerald posted a great article sharing what goes into our ranking system here. Our rankings don’t dictate future success as a volleyball player or person. These rankings are subjective but we feel with the hours spent dedicated to this process, we are on the right track. With that said, here are our updated Top 10 for the class of 2023.
1. Brooklyn DeLeye Brooklyn DeLeye 6'2" | OH Washburn Rural | 2023 State #30 Nation KS – 6’2″ – OH – Washburn Rural/Topeka Impact – Kentucky
We don’t have the stats for DeLeye, but we don’t need them. We watched enough games and films to know she was dominating and helped lead her team to an undefeated regular season. She is a player you can try to game plan for but it won’t matter.
2. Ava TeStrake Ava TeStrake 6'4" | OH Olathe Northwest | 2023 State #65 Nation KS – 6’4″ – OH – Olathe West/ KC Power – Creighton
The high school season was rough but Testrake did her part with 226 kills and 90 digs. Her long frame allows her to rise over the defense and affect the game with her blocking. She will head to Omaha to play for Creighton.
3. Sawyer Thomsen Sawyer Thomsen 6'2" | MB Free State | 2023 State #145 Nation KS – 6’2″ – OH – Lawrence Free State/ KC Power
Thomsen had a strong season that helped push her team to the state tournament. She had 175 kills on the year. She moves well along the net and I anticipate her college plans being announced sometime this club season.
4. Jaya Johnson Jaya Johnson 6'2" | MB Olathe South | 2023 State #116 Nation KS – 6’2″ – MB – Olathe South/PVA – Creighton
The athletic Johnson had a breakout club season in which she snagged an offer from Creighton, where she will join Testrake. She had 203 kills and 69 blocks for Olathe South
5. Betsy Goodenow Betsy Goodenow 6'0" | RS St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State #92 Nation KS – 6’0″ – RS – St. Thomas Aquinas/Mavs – Yale
One of our breakout players over the last 12 months was Goodenow, the left-handed striker for Aquinas/Mavs. Her junior year saw her stack up 235 kills. She has chosen Yale as her academic institution to continue her volleyball chapter.
6. Aubrey Duncan Aubrey Duncan 6'0" | MB Free State | 2023 State KS – 6’0″ – MB/OH – Lawrence Free State/Mavs
Duncan teamed with Thomsen to provide a strong front line for Free State in 2021. She was effective in her junior season will 221 kills. She should have a strong club season this winter and spring.
7. Alayna Pearson Alayna Pearson 5'6" | DS/L Blue Valley Northwest | 2023 State #110 Nation KS – 5’6″ – L/DS – Blue Valley Northwest/ KC Power – Texas A&M
We were awed with Pearson’s play last spring and she still is our top back row defender in this class. The Texas A&M pledge had 504 digs on the year.
8. Sidney Kacsir Sidney Kacsir 5'6" | DS/L Mill Valley | 2023 State KS – 5’6″ – L/DS – Mill Valley/Mavs
As much as we rave bout Pearson, we can also rave about the back row heroics of Kacsir. She is the second elite defender to find a spot in our top 10. She delivered 341 digs for Mill Valley.
9. Rylee Unruh Rylee Unruh 5'11" | S Free State | 2023 State KS – 5’11” – S – Lawrence Free -State/Dynasty – Washburn
The recent Washburn University commit had 645 assists and 162 digs on the year. For good measure, she added 127 kills.
10. Taylor Russell Taylor Russell 6'0" | OH Washburn Rural | 2023 State KS – 6’0″ – Washburn Rural/Topeka Impact
Rounding out the top 10 in the 6 foot Russell. She was another important piece for the state finalist Washburn team. As we shared previously, Washburn didn’t update their states for the season however she easily passed the eye test with her play.
