As mentioned in our preview, the 17/18 Open division will feature some top-tier 2022s, 2023s, and even a stout group of 2024s. This cross-training opportunity will help teams sharpen their skills before a big run of qualifiers, and it will also help us identify some standouts who can hang with anybody.
So, let’s get you started with a few players that we’ll be keeping an eye on at the UBT Sports Complex. These 2023s know what it takes to compete with any age group, and we anticipate that this class will have a far-reaching impact on the Power League and beyond.
Haley Wolfe Haley Wolfe 6'2" | RS Elkhorn | 2023 State NE – 6’3 MB/RS – Nebraska Elite 17 Vici – Class of 2023
17 Vici has a lot of great uncommitted frontcourt players, as you’ll soon find out in this feature. Wolfe brings a mixture of physicality, versatility, and energy that has been valuable in the Nebraska Elite gym for a while. Her role continues to grow as she looks to be a leader for 17 Vici.
Amelia Roth Amelia Roth 6'0" | MB Omaha Marian | 2023 State NE – 6’0 MB/RS – Nebraska Elite 17 Vici – Class of 2023
Roth is another middle blocker for 17 Vici who should make a big splash in 2022. She already has plenty of big-match experience on the high school side, so the prospect of facing older club teams should not be too daunting for her.
Ella Tiarks – 6’5 MB/RS – Nebraska Elite 17 Vici – Class of 2024
There are a few unknowns for me heading into this first Power League weekend, and Tiarks is certainly a player I look forward to seeing more from. The Treynor, Iowa, product is crossing the river to Nebraska Elite and has a chance to raise her stock dramatically with 17 Vici.
Abby Wachal Abby Wachal 5'10" | OH Lincoln Lutheran | 2023 State NE – 5’10 OH – VCNebraska 17 Elite – Class of 2023
While we’re making reference to high school success here, we might as well throw Wachal into the mix. There are few Nebraska athletes who put together a more dominant 2021 postseason run than her, and Wachal is bound to carry that momentum from Lincoln Lutheran to VCN.
Malayah Long Malayah Long 6'0" | S Lincoln Southwest | 2024 State #142 Nation NE – 6’0 S – VCNebraska 17 Elite – Class of 2024
Long has always been in the discussion regarding the best setters in Nebraska’s 2024 class, and another year with VCN should help her cement her frontrunner status. This setter will never be a blocking liability at the net and simply knows how to put her teammates in good positions.
Ali Butler Ali Butler 5'6" | OH Millard South | 2023 State NE – 5’8 OH/DS – Premier 17 Black – Class of 2023
Many of Premier’s teams are defined by the all-around skills of their players. Butler embodies this. She has regularly been a six-rotation attacking force throughout her career, and she brings a ton of solid passing and floor defense to the fold.
Hailey Kiscoan – 5’9 MB/OH – Premier 17 Black – Class of 2023
Kiscoan made some huge gains during the 2021 high school season. She carved out a significant role in helping Omaha Skutt earn their seventh consecutive state championship. Now, VCN will be a venue for Kiscoan to keep improving with another talented team.
Sarah Galligan – 5’8 DS/L – Nebraska Elite 16 Lokahi – Class of 2024
I recently did a deep dive into 16 Lokahi’s impressive showing at the Colorado Juniors Challange. Galligan was frequently a huge factor in that success. I’m thrilled to see this squad in person after producing some impressive film across state lines.
