What if we talked about kids that might not get the attention they deserve, but are just as hungry to play at the next level? Here are seven players in the 17 Club Red division that should make heads turn on the court.
Boiler Juniors 172E Black
Most of the time, the difference between a traditional “one’s” team and a “two’s” team is size. The division between the Gold and Black squads at Boiler Juniors has that difference, and will base the majority of their successes on their defenders, of which they have a ton. My favorite on this roster is Kara Biehl (’23, 5-4 DS/L, Frontier), who is a disciplined defender that is the definition of gym rat and excels at multiple sports (softball being the other). I also like Maicee Sterrett (’23, 5-5 DS/L, Frankfort), who can play a little front row in a pinch—she has the capability to be a six-rotation player at the high school level. Need an attacker for this bunch? Look no further than Lexi Cunningham (’23, 5-7 OH/RS, North Newton), who can play from either pin and brings a heavy arm to the fray. This team looks to make its mark in Lucas Oil Stadium at 1100 on court 126.
Circle City 17 Volt
A few courts over, at court 130, is a solid Circle squad with a physicality that seems endless. Two bigs from the same high school, Eden Myers (’23, 5-10 OH/MB, Center Grove) and Julianna Weems Julianna Weems 5'9" | MB Center Grove | 2023 State IN (’23, 5-10 MB, Center Grove) will bring it in their own ways starting tomorrow. Both have strong upper bodies and can terminate when paired with the right setter. Speaking of setters, Regan Wilson (’23, 5-7 S, Lutheran) is a small-school kid with big-school talent. She makes the position look easy, and has plenty of weapons to feed. Another attacker to keep an eye on is Reagan Merrill (’23, 5-8 OH, Avon). Previously from the Academy, she was used as a three-rotation attacker in high school, and she’s a good control option on the left pin for smaller schools at the next level.
