2022 Club Profile: L2 18 & L2 17
In this article:
In the 2022 club season, a new team is making its mark in the state of Michigan.
L2 Volleyball is debuting this year behind executive directors Sarah Lindstrom and Eric Lindstrom.
Started in hopes to compete with other top clubs in the state, the Lindstroms wanted to provide another option for players to compete at the open level of club volleyball.
Their top teams certainly have brought in some big names and are making an early splash in the club season.
Here’s a look at L2 18’s and L2 17’s roster for 2022.
L2 18
Juliana Gutknecht coaches this squad of eager 2022 talent. A lot of multi-position talents that are trying to make a strong push to close out their high-school-level careers. Layla Phillips, Natalie Dutton and Liz Vance are the primary outside options that can play either pin. All three are agile and explosive with their attacks while being able to move around the back row and be strong defensive options. In the middle, Hanna Quinn, Maria Vitale and Mia Litzenberg may not have the size of other teams’ middles, but they are athletic and can move to the outside when needed. It gives L2 some unpredictable attacking options. At setter, Preslie Riggs, Maggie Wolf and Amelia McCombs are all options to run a quick offense. McCombs can also play DS, while Wolf can shift to RS. Abbey Grose is a DS and OH option for the team. She’s accustomed to playing multiple positions and adapts well to wherever she is needed. L2 18 is still coming together as a unit, but showing improvement with each week. As the season progresses, and the players have a better feel for their role, it should lead to some stronger performances.
L2 17
L2 17 could arguably be the top team in the first-year club’s arsenal. This is a technically-sound team coached by Darien Bandel. Serving and defense will be a real strength for this group. In the back row, Allison Berent Allison Berent 5'7" | DS/L Notre Dame Prep | 2023 State #187 Nation MI and Kennedy Hudson Kennedy Hudson 5'5" | DS/L Lakeland | 2023 State MI are two great DS options that really leave it all on the court. Paige Elliott Paige Elliott 5'6" | S Country Day | 2023 State MI and Ayla Dunbar are also DS options that play multiple positions and give L2 17 great depth defensively. Elliott is a standout setter as well that has great chemistry with her hitters. Megan Grose Megan Grose 5'10" | S St. Catherine | 2023 State MI can also play setter, but is a powerful and athletic option on the outside as well. This team has some size to work with at the net in 6’2” middle Reese Williams and 6’2” OH/RS Rachel Steele Rachel Steele 6'0" | OH Eaton Rapids | 2023 State MI . Steele has really impressed early on and has a very heavy arm. Maria Trevino Nunez has been a solid six-rotation option for the squad as well. She’s as steady with her attacks as she is with her passing. She’s also proven to be a finisher from the back row. Alexis Barber, Bella Austin Bella Austin 6'0" | OH Dakota | 2023 State MI , Lillian DeJong Lillian DeJong 5'11" | RS Mercy | 2023 MI and Lauren Mullan make up the rest of the hitting crew, with many being able to shift from the middle to the outside. The early results for L2 17 have been solid, with a third-place finish in the Mizuno Steel City Freeze earlier this month. With elite-level passing and serving, this team is going to have a chance to really come through with big wins. As the offense continues to improve and gel, they should be able to contend with the top teams in the state and the region.
