The club volleyball season is pretty much over for the class of 2022 players. There are still some tournaments scheduled for the 18s, but most of the top club teams around the country have already shut down as several players are ready to start the next step of their careers at the collegiate level.

It's been a fantastic season, which culminated with the 2022 USA Volleyball Girls 18s Junior National Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, at the end of April. I've been fortunate to watch most of the top 18s teams of the Houston area in person and will take the week to highlight some of the prospects that impressed me the most in each position, starting with the setters.

[player_tooltip player_id="87470" first="Maddie" last="Waak"] – Houston Skyline 18 Royal – HS: Katy

When it comes to pure setting talent, [player_tooltip player_id="87470" first="Maddie" last="Waak"] is probably the top player in the position not only in Houston, but in the entire state. Ranked third in our 2022 Prep Dig State Rankings, the Houston Skyline playmaker is extremely fluid with her games and is one of those setters that look good on the court simply by making her hitters look even better. A lefty, Waak is effective at the net too with her 5'11” frame and adds a lot to defense as well. She's headed to LSU after four excellent years of high school volleyball at Katy.

[player_tooltip player_id="140398" first="Ava" last="Derbes"] – Woodlands Revolution 18 Premier – HS: A&M Consolidated

[player_tooltip player_id="140398" first="Ava" last="Derbes"] is another setter from the Houston area with a great combination of size, technique and volleyball IQ. A six-footer, she ran a fast-paced offense with her Woodlands Revolution team during the entire season and impressed with her ability to remain consistent and accurate with her locations. Derbes also played excellent offense and took over hitting duties when at the net, contributing to the team's success at several different levels. She will continue her career at the collegiate level at Tulane.

[player_tooltip player_id="151748" first="Kamryn" last="Scroggins"] – [program_tooltip program_id='431337' first='Texas' last='Tornados'] 18 Adidas – HS: Glenda Dawson

[player_tooltip player_id="151748" first="Kamryn" last="Scroggins"] was a much-welcomed addition to [program_tooltip program_id='431337' first='Texas' last='Tornados'] in her last year of club volleyball. The 5'9” setter made the team significantly better with her ability to be the glue that makes the whole better than the sum of its parts. Scroggins is excellent at making the most of her hitters in any situation and is not afraid of taking risks. She always looks very calm and focused on the court and that certainly further increases her level of play. Scroggins is also headed to the collegiate level after she committed to the University of New Orleans.

[player_tooltip player_id="152996" first="Avery" last="Fowler"] – TAV Houston 18 Adidas – HS: Oak Ridge

[player_tooltip player_id="152996" first="Avery" last="Fowler"] had a talented group of hitters to work with at her TAV Houston 18 Adidas team and made the most of it. Very clever and focused on the court, the 5'8” playmaker leads by example and is extremely good at what she does. She's excellent technically and very smart with her ball distribution as well, a combination that every coach dreams of for a setter. Her athleticism helps her have a better presence at the net and her backcourt game is as solid as it gets too. Fowler will remain in the area for her collegiate career as she committed to Sam Houston State.

[player_tooltip player_id="151747" first="Casey" last="Batenhorst"] – HJV 18 Elite – HS: Seven Lakes

[player_tooltip player_id="151747" first="Casey" last="Batenhorst"] is part of a traditional volleyball family in the area and has been able to keep up with the standards of her older sister Ally. At 6'1”, she's one of the most impactful setters in the entire state with her ability to be a factor when blocking or hitting. Batenhorst is very technical too and does an excellent job in setting her teammates up. Her setting style is one that thrives by consistency, intelligent choices and a calm demeanor on the court. She's headed to Southern Methodist University very soon.

Emma Coursey – Texas Legacy 18 Elite – HS: Tomball Memorial

Emma Coursey did a great job in leading her Texas Legacy's team offense during the club season. The 5'9” ballhandler is very good at making decisions and is very reliable with her locations despite playing fast. She ended her high school career with Tomball Memorial with north of 1,000 assists and is also very effective at the and an asset on defense.
