Continue ReadingWe are coming to the end of the volleyball season soon and we wanted to write a few articles on certain club teams who we think deserve some recognition for their season. Qualifier season is now coming to an end and some teams have punched their ticket to USA Volleyball Junior Nationals, which will be held in Indianapolis later on this summer. Let’s take a look at a team who has had a great season so far and who we will be seeing at Nationals. Take a bow Wave 16 Brennan…you have earned it.
The Southern California Region of USA junior Volleyball has a strong reputation of producing some of the best talent in the nation. It is super tough to stay competitive but the Wave Volleyball club has been a staple in the Open division since as long as I can remember. Their 16 Brennan team has proved to be one of the best in the nation this season. They have an overall record of 56-7 and rank 3rd overall in the nation and 1st in the Southern California Region according to AES results. They qualified in the Open division of USA Junior Nationals by going undefeated at the Red Rock Rave National Qualifier in Las Vegas. This team has exceptional ball control and amazing team chemistry. After watching them, it is due to these two traits that make them so special and able to compete against bigger and stronger teams. We are proud of their success and look forward to seeing them in Indy later this summer for Nationals. Even though we can write about each and every athlete that contributed to their success, I am only going to cover a few players that stood out while I was watching them. Let’s meet a few of them.
Jenna Hanes Jenna Hanes 6'3" | MB Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #76 Nation CA [2024] 6-3 Middle (HS: Cathedral Catholic/Club: Wave/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Jenna is currently on the watch list in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays at Cathedral Catholic High School and also club for the fantastic Wave volleyball program. In sports there are stars and there are super stars. Miss Hanes is one of the best middles in the country and she proves it on almost every possession she is involved in. When I watched her at the Red Rock Rave National Qualifier, she put on a show both offensively and defensively at the net. Usually outside hitters are the “go to” players that are game changers, but Jenna is built different. I saw this phenom destroy everything that came near her zone. Opposing hitters tried to prove themselves and she said no! Miss Hanes was a blocking machine and stole the show. Offensively she was scoring at will out of the middle to both corners with power. There was no double block that could slow her down as she turned on the ball and went around the block with no problem. Stay tuned for more on this wonderful phenom.
Amanda Saeger Amanda Saeger 5'11" | S Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #125 Nation CA [2024] 5-11 Setter (HS: Cathedral Catholic/Club: Wave/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Amanda is currently on the watch list in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays at Cathedral Catholic High School and also club for the awesome Wave volleyball program. She is a fantastic setter who was dishing some amazing dimes when I watched her play at Red Rock in Vegas this year. I was able to see an almost perfect example of how to control a match from Amanda. She was moving the ball around very well to all of her hitters. While most teams have tons of six-footers who are unstoppable, Wave has a bunch of smaller players who have to work together and have impeccable ball control in order to win. Amanda is the cornerstone of this ball control as she demonstrates it in every aspect of the game. She is able to dump the ball and score from the setting position and no one can stop her. I will be covering her at nationals this summer in Indy and look forward to writing more articles on her.
Nikole Egan Nikole Egan 5'9" | OH Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #197 Nation CA [2024] 5-9 Outside (HS: Cathedral Catholic/Club: Wave/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Nikole is currently on the watch list in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays at Cathedral Catholic High School and also plays club volleyball for Sunshine. While most outside hitters are six footers who have a very imposing stature when they walk on the court, Nikole is a bit smaller. But those who sleep on her abilities are in for a massive shock when they see her rise up and dominate at the net. She has a God given gift of flight that she uses very well for her squad. She will rip on a ball through a seam when needed, but also has an uncanny ability to score via tooling the block out of bounds. I love how she fears no one on the court and says bring it on! While most spectators will marvel at her vertical and offensive prowess, I loved watching her in the back row. She has libero-like skills in serve receive and defense out of the middle back position. She is a lot of fun to watch and should garner a lot of attention at nationals this summer. Stay tuned as I will be there in person to cover.
Other notable players for this super squad are Sofia Williams Sofia Williams 5'9" | OH San Clemente | 2024 State CA , Ayva Moi Ayva Moi 5'11" | RS Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #72 Nation CA , and libero Maya Evans. We will be highlighting these young ladies and others from this team in another article soon as they gear up for Nationals. Stay tuned for more from this wonderful team.
