One of their biggest accomplishments was placing third in the JVA Charm City Challenge tournament in Baltimore, MD. This team has some studs to watch, and I wish I could boast about them all!! For now, here are four players to watch on Triangle 17 Black.
Kat Davis- Nowadays, people are drawn to watch the giant setters and are in awe of how easy they make that second touch. However, Kat Davis, standing at 5’6, easily caught my eye because she does her job effectively at the setting position. Triangle 17 Black runs a 6’2, so she is in only in there for 3 rotations, but when Davis is in the game, she plays hard and gives 110%. Something impressive about this kid is her location. Somehow, she manages to get her feet there every time and pushes the ball exactly where it needs to go. It’s just a gift, and Kat Davis has it.
Analiese Baldauf- An all around 5’11 outside hitter, Analiese Baldauf is a key player to this 17 Black squad. Baldauf is an offensive option wherever she is on the court whether she’s hitting out of the pipe, in the middle, running a 32, or just a high ball to the pin. Plus, she’s smart about her placement and controls the ball in play. I saw her go up with a big approach and tip right over the block, and then the next play, she hit a high shot over the right back’s head on the line. Baldauf is your girl when the game is on the line.
Chideraa Ngwadom- I think this stud was one of the top players that caught my eye from this team because of her sheer athleticism and ability to just hop up and swing at any ball. Chideraa Ngwadom hits right side for Triangle 17 Black, but she could just as easily hit outside or be a middle. Moreover, Ngwadom on the right side is so effective because of her ability to hit down the line with such power. Even if the set is inside, she comes to get it and has that natural shot selection to chop that ball down line. Ngwadom can get you out of a bind if your squad is stuck in a rotation, and every coach needs that hitter.
Helen Willford- This 6’2 middle hitter, Helen Willford, must be one of the most hardworking blockers I’ve ever seen. Let me just say, blocking is hard. Sure, it takes skill, but it takes a whole lot of determination and grit to get good at it. Willford has both of these qualities. You can tell by her play that she’s constantly tracking her hitters and talking to her teammates about her game plan. In transition, she’s coming off the net quick to make herself an option as well. I think my favorite swing of hers is when she runs a 31 and swings cut back. Willford is a key part to this squad!
