Continue ReadingWe are now at the end of the volleyball season for the seniors of Texas and we wanted to write a few articles on certain club teams who we think deserve some recognition for their season. USA Volleyball Junior Nationals was just held on April 22-24th in Pheonix, AZ. Let’s take a look at a team who has had a great season so far and just had a fantastic showing at Nationals. Take a bow Madfrog 18 National Green…you have earned it.
Madfrog is a club that everyone knows and respects throughout the entire country. Year in and year out they produce teams that are competitive on the national scene. Their players play at the next level and their teams are always present in the gold brackets of major tournaments. This year their club has eighteen teams qualified for USA Junior Nationals. Yes you read that right….18 teams qualified. Wow! Their 18’s National Green team just competed at USA Nationals and put on a show to end their junior volleyball career.
18 National Green had a 48-10 overall record on the year and are ranked as the 6th best team in the nation according to AES results. They went into the Open Division of the Girls 18’s Nationals as the 3rd overall seed amongst 48 of the best teams in the entire nation. They went 7-3 in matches and went 15-8 in individual sets all throughout the tournament. Madfrog played phenomenal as they captured the USA Volleyball Girls 18 Open Silver Medal.
Even though we can write about each and every athlete that contributed to their success, I am only going to cover a few players that stood out while I was watching. Let’s meet a few of them.
Maya Duckworth Maya Duckworth 5'9" | OH Birdville | 2022 State #49 Nation TX [2022] 5-9 Outside (HS: Birdville/Club: Madfrog /Signed: Iowa State)
Maya is currently ranked as the 2nd best overall prospect and the best outside in the state in the 2022 class according to our Prep Dig State Rankings. She starred for Birdville High School and plays club for Madfrog . I loved the resiliency that she showed in the championship match after a few mishaps in serve receive. It is very difficult for a player to come back from mistakes at times, but Miss Duckworth showed just how great of a star player she is by coming back and swinging hard in set two to keep her team competing well. Her offense was stellar at times when Madfrog needed it most. The crowd was really wowed by her vertical and hang time when attacking. She showed her power numerous times as she rose up and throttled the ball from the left side. I was very impressed with that resiliency she showed during the second set in serve receive as she was stellar.
Ifenna Cos-Okpalla Ifenna Cos-Okpalla 6'2" | MB Marcus | 2022 State #123 Nation TX [2022] 6-2 Middle (HS: Marcus/Club: Madfrog /Signed: Texas A&M)
Ifenna is currently ranked as the 8th best overall prospect in the 2022 class according to our Prep Dig State Rankings. She played for Marcus High and also club for Madfrog . Madfrog was up against some amazing offensive competition in the championship match, but they used the big powerful blocking from Ifenna well. She kept her team in the match by shutting down opposing hitters at times. She also raised up and scored on some higher tempo kills out of the middle when Madfrog needed the firepower. She was one of the best players on the court for sure during the tourney.
Harmony Sample Harmony Sample 5'11" | S Hebron | 2022 State #50 Nation TX [2022] 5-11 Setter (HS: Hebron/Club: Madfrog /Signed: Notre Dame)
Harmony is currently listed as the 21st best overall prospect and 5th best setter in the state. Miss Sample plays for Hebron High School and club for Madfrog . She was a beast as both a setter and a right side all tourney. Her versatility was very apparent in the championship match as she did a little bit of everything to keep Madfrog competitive. Her accuracy as a setter was on full display as she kept her team in every rally. As a blocker, she was equally as effective routinely shutting down sunshine’s amazing hitters. Harmony’s offense was superb on the right side during the championship match. The Notre Dame commit had a beautiful tournament and we will be watching her as she continues her college career.
Avery Calame Avery Calame 5'10" | OH McKinney Boyd | 2022 State TX [2022] 5-11 Outside (HS: Boyd/Club: Madfrog /Signed: Arkansas)
Avery is currently listed as the 65th best prospect in the state according to the class of 2022 Prep Dig State Rankings. Miss Calame plays at McKinney Boyd High School and also club for the nationally known Madfrog club program. She was phenomenal on the left side as she was swinging from all over the court. She was very effective scoring out of system and putting pressure on her opponent by swinging very hard from everywhere. Her number was called numerous times during the championship match as an attacker. This young lady just showed Arkansas exactly what kind of player they are getting with her play during the tourney. She will be a game changer for their program next year.
