Continue ReadingThe culminating event for the CEVA season is the Regional tournament. All teams participating in CEVA Power League compete for their final standing of the season. For this series, we will be spotlighting athletes from teams that finished in the top 20 for the 18U/16U division who were nominated by their club coach, or a club coach from another team.
Without further ado, here are the 2024 passers that had stellar performances.
Angie Acosta Angie Acosta 5'2" | DS/L David Douglas | 2024 State OR , 5’2”, DS, David Douglas High School, Chaos Elite 18-1

Acosta is one of two primary liberos for the Chaos 18-1 Elite team. A team filled with 2022s, she and 2023 Lukovich are the only non-seniors on the team. Acosta is actually a sophomore playing up to the 18U age bracket and is doing so with great success. Her serve receive is next level, consistently putting up dime passes for the setters. She is controlled, quick, and dynamic in all aspects of her game.
Lily Burson Lily Burson 5'5" | DS/L Mountainside | 2024 State OR , 5’4”, DS/S, Forest Grove High School, Athena Volleyball Academy 16-2 Black

Burson is a versatile and dynamic athlete, fulfilling a new position this season for the Athena 16-2 Black team. Previously trained as a setter, she instead saw court time as the teams primary defesive specialist. A solid right back defender, who can jump into set when needed, she is a critical aspect to this teams success. Her coach praised her killer jump float serve that tended to rack up loads of points for the team. Her serving, all out defense, and lethal backrow attack were vital in the teams #10 finish in the 16U division at Regionals.
Maile Chan Maile Chan 5'3" | DS/L Mountainside | 2024 State #156 Nation OR , 5’3”, DS, Mountainside High School, Athena Volleyball Academy 16-1 Gold

Chan is at the heart of the Athena 16-1 Gold team’s back row, seeing court time as their primary libero. Her back row efforts have shined through, helping this team achieve major success throughout the season. She shows relentless pursuit on the court, never letting a ball drop without effort. Chan has been noticed by other coaches, giving her props for her insanely talented defensive efforts and controlled serve receive.
Mary Matthews Mary Matthews 5'5" | DS/L Wilsonville | 2024 State OR , 5’6”, DS, Wilsonville High School, Volleyball Alliance 18-Monica

Matthews took on the role of primary libero for the Volleyball Alliance 18-Monica team this season. Matthews is actually a sophomore playing up to the 18U age bracket and is doing so with great success. She performed her duties as a libero very well over Regionals and picked up balls all over the court. Her coach commended her ability to read the offense well. Her ball control, defense, and speed are “top-notch”.
Halle Reiter, 5’4″, DS, Camas High School, Oregon Juniors Volleyball Academy 16-1 Gold

Reiter is the standout libero for the OJVA 16-1 Gold team, and was a major component of their success at Regionals, finishing as the top 16U team. She played steady all weekend long and was exceptional on the defensive side of things. She brought consistent ball control on serve receive. Her coach praised her for her phenomenal play and the leadership she brings to the team and the court.
Ashelyn Sharkey, 5’4”, DS, Creswell High School, Unity 16-1

Sharkey was a major player in the lineup for Unity 16-1, helping them achieve their highest Regional finish since the founding of the club in 2015. As their starting libero, she brings solid ball control and standout defnse to keep her team in system. Her coach commended her play against some very tough teams on the second day of Regionals. Her ability to keep the ball in play helped the team reach their goal of hitting the top 20 16U teams at Regionals.
