Doing it twice is legendary.
Tuesday was a big day for the Legacy Volleyball program, as it collected two Open AAU National Championships.
It was an even more special day for Legacy 17-1 ADIDAS, as a majority of its roster earned a second AAU national title when it won the 17 Open.
A collection of the same players had won the 16 Open of the AAU National Championship in 2021, making them back-to-back champs.
After just dropping one set during the 2021 event, Legacy 17-1 ADIDAS had to show its resiliency in Orlando this past week.
The team suffered a three-set loss to Rev 17-1 during the third day of pool play and had to claw out a three-set win over A5 Muzino 171 Jing just to get into the gold bracket.
During bracket play, Legacy dropped its first set to Top Select 17 Elite Blue, But, that just seemed to wake them up. They would go on to win six straight sets, which included a 25-20, 25-19 win over Rev 17-1 in the final to avenge the prior loss.
It was no surprise to see outside hitter Harper Murray Harper Murray 6'2" | OH Skyline | 2023 State #2 Nation MI named MVP of the 17 Open and an Open All-American. She’s played at such a high level for so many years, we kind of forget how special a player she is.
Nobody can touch Murray when it comes to her dialed up attack. It scores and it comes at an impossible angle to defend. But, she’s also so craft and intelligent on the floor that she just knows what kind of shot is needed at the right time.
Fellow outside Nina Horning Nina Horning 6'5" | OH Lake Orion | 2023 State #50 Nation MI , as well as libero Sarah Vellucci Sarah Vellucci 6'0" | OH Novi | 2023 State #97 Nation MI were also Open All-Americans. Horning has really taken up her intensity level in the last year to prove she’s up there with the best in the nation. Vellucci has continued to get better at a position that she doesn’t always play, but has clearly found a home at. She’s very calm and in control in the back row.
Special mentions should go to Legacy’s middles Abigail Reck Abigail Reck 6'2" | MB Northville | 2023 State #74 Nation MI and Laurece Abraham Laurece Abraham 6'1" | MB Country Day | 2023 State #111 Nation MI . Reck was an absolutely dominant blocker. She was a game-changer for Legacy early on during bracket play when the team needed a boost after dropping that first set. Abraham was an explosive finisher that also gave the team a lot of juice when it needed a highlight-reel kill to get momentum back.
Credit also goes to setter Erin Kline Erin Kline 6'2" | S Mercy | 2023 State #123 Nation MI , who puts all these talented hitters in position to excel. She’s run a very fast-paced offense for years and now has led them to two national titles. Her defensive effort also is an underrated aspect of her game.
