It’s one thing to have a team from the state collect the AAU Open national championship, but it’s another to have three teams place in the top eight and two in the top four.
Legacy 15-1 ADIDAS showed a lot of grit Wednesday on its way to collecting the club program’s fourth AAU Open National Championship (fifth would come just a few hours later).
It came back from down a set in both the semifinal and the final, topping OT 15 T Randy in the championship, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12.
Mix in Michigan Elite 15-Mizuno reaching the semifinal before a close three-set loss to OT, as well as FaR Out 15 Black reaching the quarterfinal before falling to Legacy, and it was a banner day for the state.
Legacy showed a lot of resiliency throughout the championship bracket, with all players contributing in their own way.
However, it’s hard to look past the play of Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI at setter and Gabriella DiVita on the outside.
Flynn lived up to the hype of being one of the top players in the Class of 2025 with her amazing touch and decision-making. It’s almost as if she wasn’t even touching the ball at times, she’s able to play it so quickly and smoothly.
Her aggressive play at the net also kept opposing blockers guessing throughout the matches, which came in key to allow Legacy to storm back in its final two outings.
DiVita played as well as any outside in the 15 Open despite being a 2026 prospect. She certainly has forced national pundits to have to consider her as one of the best 2026 players in the country. Teams had to give her a double block when the ball went her way, and even then it couldn’t stop her.
Ohio libero Devin Dzienny was very consistent and strong in the back row as well for Legacy, while Marie Laurio Marie Laurio 5'10" | OH Saline | 2025 State #147 Nation MI came through with some really timely kills during the close sets.
Michigan Elite made its run and fell in the semifinal by a 15-13 score in the third set.
It was right there in the mix and outside Isabelle Busignani Isabelle Busignani 6'1" | OH Marian | 2025 State #73 Nation MI was a workhorse for the squad. She got a lot of swings, but also consistently finished and played very well defensively.
McKenna Payne McKenna Payne 5'7" | DS/L SMCC | 2025 State #105 Nation MI was all over the court and getting to nearly every ball at libero. She was key in keeping the team in the tight sets. Ella Craggs Ella Craggs 5'9" | S Northville | 2025 State #127 Nation MI was also very strong at setter.
Navea Gauthier Navea Gauthier 6'1" | OH Shelby | 2025 State #56 Nation MI held her own with top outsides in the nation to lead FaR Out 15 Black on the day. She’s very explosive and a real force at the net.
