Much like a quarterback on the football field, because of the number of contacts per match, setters have an immense impact on the outcome. Here are some of the 2024 setters expected to lead their high school teams successfully this season.
Rylee Dolven
Rylee Dolven
The All-State Honorable Mention pick will be back to lead a strong Kamiakin squad into the 4A season. Dolven is the ultimate team leader, positively rallying her team when needed and most importantly putting up consistent, accurate sets for her attackers. When she has the offense operating full tilt, her tempo is fast and low to either pin, letting her hitters take swings against a late block. With two front-liners attackers playing with her at both Shockwave and Kamiakin, a palpable feel and awareness for her hitters shows in her setting.

Lauren York

Built strong enough to push her sets to the pin while pushed to the right side, York is primed for a big year leading the always competitive Bulldogs from Colfax. Her fundamentals are solid, and she executes a nice understanding of getting her feet to the ball and taking it at the midline. She set a 5-1 eventually for her club team and showed a nice array of dumps and attacks while in the front row. As she continues to polish her all-around play, Colfax will be in the hunt again for state hardware.
Isabel Cai
Isabel Cai
There is a sense of composure and flow to Cai’s game, she never seems to get sped up or overcome by the moment. Her foot and hand work are extremely neutral and repeatable, keeping the defense guessing on where the set will go. Once she has set her middles a few times, she will flick the ball to the outside or right-side to find single blocking. One thing that stood out during club was the appropriate height of her middle sets. They rarely come out low and give her attackers a chance to go up and get solid if not ferocious contact on the ball. Middles would rather go up high to take a swing then have to poke the ball over that’s set only 6 inches above the net- Isabel keeps it where they like it.
Grace Rice

Athletic enough to throw out a good set even when she is packed close to the net, Rice does a nice job helping out her passers when everything isn’t perfect. She will dig one out of the bottom of the net as well, and she has excellent control bump setting from her platform. Taking a hard ball defensively over hand looks natural when she sin left back, it’s never an easy score when hitters test her down the line.
Katelyn Eichert
Katelyn Eichert
Eichert stays dynamic in her setting, jump-setting everything she can to deliver the ball high to her middles and keeping defenders honest on sets to the pins. She played extremely well at the Emerald City Classic for WVBA, making sure her hitter shad balls in the zone to put good swings on, even if she had set from her knees in emergencies. She will be counted on to distribute the ball for a powerful Lake Stevens team reloading for a run at a state title. A great work ethic translates into a relentless motor on the court.
Exciting new setters will break out as the 2022 season kicks off, while these juniors listed can be expected to pile up the wins as they challenge for a state title. Look for more coverage on 2024 setters as the season swings into motion in early September.
