When novices watch the game of volleyball, they typically gravitate to the attackers who get the points, but high level coaches, scouts, and recruiters see the high level defenders who make the magic happen. Here are 6 dynamic defenders who will be destroying attacker’s dreams for years to come.
Some defenders struggle to stick with the flight of the ball after it makes contact with the block, but Morrison does a great job making a calm, deliberate movement while tracking the ball. Morrison takes charge of everything down the line when either pin is swinging and makes a quick first step in if the attack tries going high over the block. She plays with far more maturity than most freshmen.
Dillon is the type of player who is going to do whatever she can to help the team. At Nationals she saw opportunities to take swings in the front and back court, and she capitalized on those. She is solid in serve-receive and makes some big defensive plays as the middle back defender.
Faber moves well in the back court and is sound on serve-receive. She gets a lot of great defensive touches on the ball and moves well around the blockers set-up. Faber takes care of the routine stuff and finds a way to keep the impossible balls in play.

Garr is a player who makes big plays look routine. I love defenders who don’t make a play look flashy because they didn’t read it or they waited too long to react. Garr practically sees the future and moves so smoothly across the floor.
Moe may be the proof you needed that great things come in small packages. She’s been paying her dues and playing defensive specialist behind the likes of 2023’s Ilah Little. Surely this time and experience will help her in the future as she can focus on what she needs to do to be her best. She also had an explosive serve in 2021, and I’m excited to see how it has evolved.

Meyer is a relentless defender who does a great job at playing the ball above all else. She has great fast twitch reactions and makes big heads-up plays on the ball. Meyer makes the plays that infuse energy into her team and then her celebrations for her teammates’ successes are infectious! It’s hard not to smile when you watch her.
