We started things off in Division 1 and had over 128,000 votes cast for the week. We appreciate you all taking part.
Here’s a look at the leading vote getters from the D1 poll.
Cameron Herman Cameron Herman 5'11" | OH Hartland | 2024 State MI , Hartland OH (26.60%)
Herman has a loyal fanbase in Hartland and the Eagle faithful showed up all week. Herman and Schomer were neck-and-neck in the voting in the closing days, but Herman’s camp came out strong in the end and led her with over 34,000 votes for the week. Herman steps into her junior year as the go-to player for Hartland. She’s improved her hitting a great deal in the last year and has a clear command on the court. The Eagles are looking for a bounce-back season in 2022. If they can do it, it’s likely because of Herman’s play. That could be enough to put her in the Player of the Year discussion.
Ella Schomer Ella Schomer 6'0" | RS Marian | 2023 State #142 Nation MI , Marian OH (22.81%)
Schomer will be looking to give Marian a third consecutive state championship and D1 Player of the Year award in 2022. It’s entirely possible she can follow in the footsteps of N.C. State freshman Ava Brizard, as Schomer steps into a senior leadership role as an outside this fall. A determined player that has a great all-around game, Schomer will get every opportunity to showcase her skills this fall. She received just under 30,000 votes in our poll. Should Marian make another run at a championship, Schomer will be a big part of that success.
Sarah Vellucci Sarah Vellucci 6'0" | OH Novi | 2023 State #97 Nation MI , Novi OH (10.50%)
Novi’s do-everything player certainly is one of the most valuable to her team of anyone in the state. Vellucci is an elite-level libero on the club circuit, but combines that with a powerful outside hitting game during prep season for the Wildcats. She’s very poised and in control wherever she is at on the court and her confidence level should be at an all-time high coming into this fall season. Novi certainly has to be considered a D1 contender this year with a great defensive core of players. Vellucci received over 13,000 votes in our poll.
Caroline Baker Caroline Baker 5'9" | S Byron Center | 2024 State MI , Byron Center S (8.51%)
Byron Center is going to be led by a veteran group of juniors this fall and Baker will be the one to set the tempo of the offense. A very active setter, Baker contributes in a number of ways, but will be relied on for more leadership this year. She’s got a group of hitters to connect with that are hungry and eager to prove themselves as well. With the Bulldogs likely to be more of a balanced offensive team this year, Baker can certainly establish her importance by making the offense run at a high level. Baker just under 11,000 votes in our poll.
Zoey Dood Zoey Dood 6'2" | S Grandville | 2024 State #131 Nation MI , Grandville S (7.21%)
One of the top setters nationally in the Class of 2024, this fall season is a real chance for Dood to put her name on the map at the high school level. After a district championship last fall, the door is over for Grandville to make a big jump in the always-competitive Grand Rapids area. Dood will be able to push a pace offensively that many teams won’t be able to compete with. Should Grandville find its way to the top of GR, it immediately becomes a contender in the D1 state title picture. Dood received over 9,000 votes in our poll.
