Expect more of these results roundups throughout the season as we track the progression of the high school season and try to include as many teams in the conversation as possible. With that in mind, here are a few of yesterday’s results that stand out.
The Saga Continues
Papillion-La Vista South and Millard West just keep trading blows.
At last weekend’s Bellevue West Invite, we documented the thrilling victory for Millard West over Papio South in bracket play. It was a match with a ton of energy and passion, and much of that probably stemmed from Papio South’s triumph over the Wildcats in last fall’s Class A championship match.
It’s only fitting that the two teams met again Tuesday, three days after last weekend’s tournament duel. This time, though, the defending champs had a chance to defend their home court and did so admirably. Left-side hitters Stella Adeyemi Stella Adeyemi 5'9" | OH Papillion-LaVista South | 2023 State #95 Nation NE and Lauren Medeck Lauren Medeck 5'10" | OH Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State #31 Nation NE flexed their offensive dominance and hit for a high efficiency on a massive volume of swings.
So, maybe you can call it a draw between the Wildcats and Titans so far in 2022, but this saga is only just starting.
In the Star City
Teams from across Lincoln were in action on Tuesday, and we’ve got a few key results to cover from that group.
Lincoln East keeps rolling. The Spartans picked up an emphatic straight-set victory in a visit to cross-town rival Lincoln Southeast. It’s a continuation of the momentum-building tournament title at Bellevue West last weekend, and East is clearly determined to be in the postseason conversation this season.
Lincoln Southwest also seems content with making it back to the state championships, too. The Silver Hawks downed Lincoln Pius X and Millard North in last night’s triangular. This brings the team’s overall mark to 3-0 heading into a road matchup with Kearney on Thursday. Senior pin hitters Brinly Christensen Brinly Christensen 5'10" | OH Lincoln Southwest | 2023 State NE and Alexa Gobel Alexa Gobel 5'11" | OH Lincoln Southwest | 2023 State NE have seized leading roles with Southwest, and I’m excited to get an in-person look at this team’s new wave of stars.
Also of Note
Howells-Dodge has played yet another early-season thriller, this time against Class C2 powerhouse Clarkson-Leigh. The Jaguars swiped a 3-2 victory to get back in the win column after falling to defending C2 champ Oakland-Craig last week.
Let’s get a few other five-set thrillers into the mix here. Gretna and Elkhorn South produced a classic that ultimately went to the Dragons in a tie-breaking set. If it’s any indication of how grueling this match was, Gretna sophomore Elle Heckenlively Elle Heckenlively 5'10" | OH Gretna | 2025 State NE piled up a whopping 66 swings Tuesday night. Dragon libero Faith Frame Faith Frame 5'6" | DS/L Papillion-La Vista | 2024 State #167 Nation NE led the defense with 29 digs.
Elmwood-Murdock prevailed in a five-set contest of its own against Auburn. We’ll have plenty of small-town spotlights throughout the year, a these two squads should factor heavily in those features.
Grand Island Central Catholic is still on a roll after defeating Blue Hill in straight sets to improve to 4-0 on the season. It’s an impressive start for the Crusaders, but it almost feels like par for the course for this storied program.
