The 2022 season is no different and introduces some of the biggest impact rookies we’ve seen in a hot minute. So young in their careers, many of these athletes have already played on the biggest of stages and are bringing their experience to their debut high school seasons.
Let’s break down the Midseason Freshman Phenom Report!
Gabby DiVita Gabby DiVita 6'1" | OH Grosse Pt. South | 2026 State MI – 6’1 OH – Grosse Pointe South
Like I said in the open, a lot of these players are coming with some high level playing experience already in their young careers. Gabby DiVita Gabby DiVita 6'1" | OH Grosse Pt. South | 2026 State MI is one of the most awarded freshmen and playing like a seasoned veteran in her debut season. Divita has a cannon of an arm and some amazing ball control that creates a great storyline for Grosse Pointe South to be a major contender in Division 1 for years to come.
Aubree Deshetsky Aubree Deshetsky 5'9" | OH North Branch | 2026 State MI – 5’9 OH/S – North Branch
If one Deshetsky wasn’t enough, add in another one to the mix and you got some serious trouble. Aubree Deshetsky Aubree Deshetsky 5'9" | OH North Branch | 2026 State MI comes in a long line of Deshetsky’s in the North Branch pipeline and joins her older sister, Alana, this season. Aubree has cemented herself opposite her sister in the starting line-up and a go-to attacker contributing close to two kills per set on the season. Aubree can also set at a very high level, giving Coach Jim Fish some options in his lineup.
Kayla Nwabueze Kayla Nwabueze 6'2" | MB Bloomfield Hills | 2026 State MI – 6’1 MB – Bloomfield Hills
This player was one of the most intriguing players coming into the 2022 season. A lot of questions surrounded which high school she would play for. Now that she is at Bloomfield Hills, she has been a huge piece of their game. A middle that can play six rotations. Check. An offensive dynamo at the net and behind the ten foot line? Check. Kayla Nwabueze Kayla Nwabueze 6'2" | MB Bloomfield Hills | 2026 State MI has been showcasing a lot of versatility in her game throughout her debut.
Meredith Martin Meredith Martin 5'7" | DS/L Marian | 2026 State MI – 5’7 L – St. Mary’s Orchard Lake
Another player where a lot of question surrounded her landing spot for her high school career, Meredith Martin Meredith Martin 5'7" | DS/L Marian | 2026 State MI , alongside her club teammate Nwabueze, has cemented herself as her squad’s heart beat. She’s one of the most promising defenders in the state and can contend with just about any attacker she faces. In her most recent outing at The Program Cup at the Legacy Center, Martin earned All-Tournament honors.
Faith Cullen Faith Cullen 5'10" | OH Brighton | 2026 State MI – 5’7 OH – Brighton
I had little doubt that Faith Cullen Faith Cullen 5'10" | OH Brighton | 2026 State MI would find herself amongst the starting lineup mix for the Brighton Bulldogs this season. Despite her size, Cullen is such a physical attacker with great ball control. Cullen plays years above her age. Even before Brighton began to experience some injuries throughout its line up, Cullen has been challenging for time and delivering when her name is called off the bench.
Jaidyn Vanochten Jaidyn Vanochten 5'5" | DS/L Reese | 2026 State MI – 5’4 L – Reese
The defending state champs in Division 3 lost a lot coming into 2022. The big question mark fell upon the setter and libero. Well, the heir to the libero jersey has been found in freshman, Jaidyn Vanochten Jaidyn Vanochten 5'5" | DS/L Reese | 2026 State MI . Joining older sister, Jerzie Vanochten Jerzie Vanochten 5'7" | S Reese | 2023 MI , Jaidyn takes over the jersey from All-State selection, Josie Johnson Josie Johnson 5'5" | DS/L Reese | 2022 MI from last season and has done remarkably well in the position. Her reception is very strong for her age and her defense is a nice developing story.
Madeline Dettling Madeline Dettling 6'0" | OH SMCC | 2026 State MI – 6’0 OH – St. Mary’s Catholic Central
Speaking of Division 3 ball, last year’s State Runner-Ups were lead by a pair of two freshmen phenoms in Jessica Costlow Jessica Costlow 5'11" | OH SMCC | 2025 State #142 Nation MI and McKenna Payne McKenna Payne 5'7" | DS/L SMCC | 2025 State #105 Nation MI on the left side. SMCC brings in yet another high level rookie on the pins. Madeline Dettling Madeline Dettling 6'0" | OH SMCC | 2026 State MI has not only found herself in the starting lineup for the top rated team in D3, but she’s found herself as a go-to in the offense. On the right side primarily, Dettling delivers a heavy ball and a consistent force on the block!
