I mentioned in our preseason stat stuffer previews that we would keep using this series to highlight athletes from a variety of classes, school sizes, and geographical regions. It all starts here, and I hope you’ll join me as we continue our ever-present pursuit to feature as many players as possible.
So, here’s who lit up the scoreboard in the first week of high school action in Nebraska.
It’s no surprise to see Snodgrass lighting up the stat sheet to start her senior campaign. The Duchesne middle blocker has reached a staggering .433 hitting percentage after one week of play and is maintaining that clip on nearly four kills per set. But, as we know, this is just a continuation of Snodgrass’s career-long success with the Cardinals.
Here’s another senior middle blocker who has quickly found her form in the 2022 season. Loschen was one of the most persistent standouts at last weekend’s Bellevue West Invitational, and that has certainly manifested in the stat sheet. Her 4.7 kills per set is among the state’s best at her position.
McCormack’s impact with Millard North is not just felt in the attacking phase, where she’s averaging 3.5 kills per set so far. This natural backcourt defender will invariably rack up a lot of digs when she’s rotated along the end line.
Highlights
We theorized that Jelinek may transition into an outside hitter role with Norris this year, and that’s what we saw in Week 1. Like McCormack, Jelinek will do a lot more than just rack up kills in the frontcourt for the Titans. She wore the libero jersey during her freshman campaign and brings that same defensive prowess to her new six-rotation hitter spot.
Highlights
Lincoln East’s offense just keeps getting better with Bradford at the helm. We documented the Spartans’ extraordinary breakthrough at the Bellevue West Invitational, and this junior setter has been instrumental in the team’s success. Her ability to pile up assists on the stat sheet only scratches the surface of Bradford’s impact.
Uhlir has taken the reins of a very well-balanced Bennington offense this year. She has exceeded 12 assists per set in her early-season appearances, which is an eye-popping mark in the high school game. The Badgers seem poised to make some noise this year with Uhlir taking on more responsibilities as an upperclassman.
Highlights
Florell is a name we’ve mentioned in this stat stuffer context before, and she has seemingly taken her game to the next level in 2022. She has helped set up the electrifying Overton offense that is keen on making a return trip to Lincoln to find postseason redemption.
Lincoln Lutheran has a few new faces after last year’s run to the state championships, but Saathoff is one of the important constants that will maintain her team’s status as a championship frontrunner. She has a background as a setter and an opposite, so expect her to keep piling up stats in a variety of categories.
Highlights
Rice is accustomed to doing a little bit of everything for Waverly. She has spent some time as a frontcourt hitter, but her stat production stands out most on the defensive side. This rising junior showed off her relentless backcourt style at the Bellevue West Invitational, and Rice can be one of Class B’s top dig producers by year’s end.
Backemeyer keeps putting in work for Elmwood-Murdock. We got a glimpse of her defensive dominance at last year’s state championships, and 2022 has already offered more of the same. It’s almost a sure bet that she will be one of the most statistically productive defenders in the state, and Backemeyer could even top her massive totals from last season.
