Legacy picked up a pair of wins in Power Pool B and the won a crossover match with Michigan Elite 18 Mizuno to grab the top spot in Sunday’s Gold Bracket.
The 18 Open featured a unique format as the top six teams, based on seeding, were placed in two 3-team pools. All six Power Pool teams automatically had a spot in the Gold Bracket. The other three pools saw their top two squads advance to Sunday’s Gold Bracket.
Legacy managed to managed to sweep all three opponents it faced on Saturday. In Power Pool B, it swept Hurricanes 18 Black (25-21, 29-27) before besting MKE Sting 18 Gold (25-22, 25-23).
The surprises came in Power Pool A where Circle City 18 Purple, the second-ranked 18-club in the country by PrepVolleyball.com, lost both of its opening matches to Michigan Elite 18 Mizuno (21-25, 25-19, 15-13) and to FaR Out 18 Black (25-17, 21-25, 16-14). Michigan Elite would go on to claim the pool’s top spot with a 25-17, 27-25 win over FaR Out.
In the crossover battle for the top seed in the tournament, Legacy started fast en route to a 25-13 victory in the opening set. The two were tied 7-7 before Legacy would score 13 of the next 16 points to break the set open.
The second set saw Michigan Elite lead most of the way and have Legacy down 22-19, but Legacy rallied late behind the play of Maria Mallon (Cincinnati), who had a key block to tie the match at 22-22 and then supplied the match-ending kill to give Legacy a 26-24 victory.
Joining the six Power Pool squads in the Gold Bracket are: Volleywood Starz 18 Elite, Michigan Elite 18 Elite East, Legacy 18-National, Five1 VBC 18-ADIDAS, Impact VBC 18 Open and Unified 18-1.
Pool C Recap: Volleywood Starz 18 Elite ran through the field in six sets, allowing an average of just 14.8 points per set. Michigan Elite 18 Elite East grabbed the second spot of the four teams thanks to its wins over Dunes 18 Black (25-17, 25-19) and Impact VBC 18 National (25-20, 25-21).
Pool D Recap: Three teams each went 2-1 and each won five sets while dropping three as this proved to be the most competitive set. Legacy 18-National got the nod for first place thanks to its wins over Five1 VBC 18-ADIDAS (25-16, 24-26, 16-14) and Jr. Gryphones 18U (28-26, 25-16). Five 1VBC ended up in second thanks to its 25-18, 19-25, 15-8 win over South County Bandits.
Pool E Recap: Impact VBC 18 Open rank the table to claim the pool’s top spot. Impact didn’t drop a set as it allowed just 13.6 points per set. Unified 18-1 gave Impact its toughest set (27-25) on the day and eventually earned wins over Maverick Bronco’s (25-18, 25-12) and MVA 18 National Black (25-15, 25-11) to finish second in the pool.
