Here are five big takeaways from Tuesday, Sept. 11.
#1 – MUDECAS championship match set as Johnson-Brock & BDS win semifinal matches
The MUDECAS conference tournament always features some of the best small-school volleyball in the state early in the season and this year is no different, as the championship match on Thursday night at Southeast Community College in Beatrice will feature Class D-2 #1 BDS against Class D-1 #2 Johnson-Brock.
Johnson-Brock (12-1) advanced to the title match with a 25-20, 25-17 win over Class D-1 #8 Diller-Odell in the semifinals. Meanwhile, BDS (8-1) got to the championship by defeating Class C-2 #7 Freeman (10-3) by a score of 25-20, 25-21.Here is a look at the schedule for Thursday in the MUDECAS tournament.
A Division:
2:00 P.M. – Exeter-Milligan vs Sacred Heart
5:00 P.M. – A Division 3rd Place Game – Diller-Odell vs Freeman (Striv Sports)
8:00 P.M. – A Division Championship – Johnson-Brock vs BDS (Striv Sports)
B Division
1:00 P.M. – Pawnee City vs JCC
3:30 P.M. – B Division 3rd Place Game – Meridian vs Southern (Striv Sports)
6:30 P.M. – B Division Championship – Tri County vs Sterling (Striv Sports)

#2 – Fixemer’s monster night helps Millard South hold off Bellevue West in five sets
Millard South junior middle Paige Fixemer went off for 23 kills and seven blocks to help Class A #7 Millard South holds off Bellevue West 27-25, 25-21, 26-28, 26-28, 15-11 Tuesday night.
Freshman Maddie MacTaggart added 20 kills and four aces for the Patriots while Lauren Walenz had eight kills, three aces and 18 digs and Kelsey Olson had nine kills. Sam Steele had 27 digs for Millard South and Makayla Fleming had 59 assists.
For Bellevue West, freshman Kealy Kiviniemi had 15 kills and 4 1/2 blocks while Makena Sobczyk had 13 kills, Jacki Apel had 11 kills and 4 1/2 blocks and Kaia Hada had 10 kills. Jayna Hope had 10 digs and three aces for the T-Birds while Brittney Sheibal had 23 digs and Parker Lauterbach had 45 assists and 12 digs.
#3 – Waverly gets five-set win over Norris in battle between ranked Class B teams
After beating Class B #10 Norris 2-1 on Saturday, Waverly was able to turn around and do it again on Tuesday night – this time in five sets as the Class B #8 Vikings took a 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12 victory.
Sophomore Whitney Lauenstein led Waverly with 22 kills while Mollie Grosshans had 13 kills and 3 1/2 blocks. Kelsey Perrotto had eight kills and 16 digs while Halle Schawang had 30 digs and Annika Evans had 53 assists.
For Norris, Nyah Chambers had 15 kills while Michaela Boon and Brianna Stai each had 12. Molly Ramsey had 29 digs and Maisie Boesiger had 23 assists.
#4 – David City Aquinas gets rare win over Columbus Scotus with major rally
It doesn’t seem as though anyone really knows how long it has been, but let’s just say it’s been a while since David City Aquinas has defeated Columbus Scotus in volleyball. That changed last night in dramatic fashion as Aquinas rallied for a 28-30, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-4 victory.
Micaiah Vrbka had 13 kills and seven blocks for Aquinas while Kloe Ruth had 13 kills and three aces and Larissa Sellers had 11 kills. Breanna Stouffer added 25 assists and five aces for Aquinas and Justine Berringer had 16 digs.
#5 – Freshman leads Class C-1 Wahoo in rout of Arlington
It would be hard to have a better night than Wahoo freshman Mya Larson had for the Warriors in their 25-3, 25-2, 25-15 win over Arlington on Tuesday night.
Larson had 16 kills and just one hitting error on 18 swings for a .833 hitting percentage to go along with nine ace serves in the match. Senior sister Elly Larson had 10 kills and Kyla Swanson had nine for Wahoo while Kendall Brigham had six aces and eight digs and Elle Glock had 35 assists.
