Continue ReadingFreshman year is always a year of unknown, a lot of new, and a lot of changes going on on so many levels. Sophomore year, athletes start to get a little more comfortable, their skill set has developed and they start to develop leadership among their teams. The Class of 2021 has a few standouts who have already committed with Phyonna Schrader of Ankeny going to Notre Dame, Sydney Dennis of North Cedar heading to Iowa, and Eve Magill of Cedar Rapids Xavier being the latest to commit to Creighton. Here are some Class of 2021, Sophomores who are having a breakout year.
Saari Kuehl – Gladbrook-Reinbeck
Kuehl found her way on to the varsity team making a small splash, but has absolutely exploded her Sophomore year. Kuehl is a long, athletic pin who has had some major matches which most recently included a 28 kill match against West Marshall. Overall, Kuehl is averaging 4.7 kills per set and hitting .320. Those are outstanding numbers for a middle, let alone an outside hitter. With Kuehl hitting her stride and playing six rotations all around she will definitely be catching the eye of college coaches and will be a huge postseason threat as well as a breakout year on the club scene too.
Kylie Greenfield – Lake Mills
Greenfield is a new addition to Lake Mills and has been a force to reckon with in the Top of Iowa Conference. Greenfield is 5’10, playing all the way around, and is a strong physical force at the net offensively and defensively. Greenfield currently has 227 kills over 100 digs and averaging 3.29 kills per set.
Sydney Marlow – West Burlington
Southeast Iowa has always had some really solid hidden gems, that by the time they get out of high school they are household names (I think the nation is pretty familiar with Mikaela Foecke who prepped at Holy Trinity and has two national championships at Nebraska). Marlow has been averaging 5.12 kills per set and over 300 kills on the season. Marlow also has just under 5 digs per set as well.
Belle Weber – Union
Competing in one of the top small school conferences in the state in the NICL with likes of Dike-New Hartford, Waterloo Columbus, Sumner-Fred, and Hudson these teams are among the top in the state in any class. Weber was a first team all conference member in 2017 and this year so far is at 319 kills and 4.14 kills per set.
Danielle Johnson – Osage
Johnson already has a state tournament under her belt for Osage who is still in one of the top teams in Class 3A. Working with Senior setter, Rylie Olson, Johnson is leading the Green Devils with 3.12 kills per set and a hitting efficiency of 343. They will be looking to make their third straight state tournament appearance after a semifinal appearance in 2017. Johnson played her club ball for Six Pack in 2018.
Morgan Middleton – Clarion-Goldfield
Middleton and Clarion-Goldfield have built themselves a strong season with Middleton being the major go-to threat leading the team with over 300 kills, 4.42 per set. Middleton also has over 100 digs, she is teammates with Johnson at Six Pack.
