Here are five big takeaways from Tuesday, Oct. 2.
#1 – Elkhorn South stuns top-ranked Millard North
Elkhorn South started the year 11-0 and at times during the first couple weeks of the season looked like it could be one of best teams in the state. Then the Storm hit a bump in the road and consistency went out the window during a stretch when Elkhorn South went 8-7.
Last night, the dominating version of Elkhorn South showed up and knocked off Class A #1 Millard North 25-19, 19-25, 27-25, 25-21. It’s just the second loss of the season for Millard North.
Nebraska recruit Rylee Gray had 19 kills and four blocks for Elkhorn South while Logan Connealy had 12 kills and 14 digs. Mackenzie Saitta had 10 kills and Ibi Green had nine while Jordan McCormick had 15 digs and Madi Woodin had 54 assists and 10 digs.
For Millard North, Allie Kerns had 13 kills while McKenna Ruch had 13 kills and 3 1/2 blocks. Paige Holdsworth finished the match with 11 kills and 13 digs while Emma Altman had 17 digs and Izzy Lukens finished with 43 assists and 14 digs.
#2 – Millard West wins wild five-set match over Papillion-LaVista
In a match between two of the top teams in Class A, Millard West was able to prevail, pulling out a 30-28, 23-25, 25-27, 25-20, 15-10 victory over the Monarchs.
Sadie Millard led a balanced Millard West attack with 15 kills while Hailey Petersen had 14 and Gabi Nordaker had 14 kills and five blocks. Bailey Wilson finished with 12 kills and three aces and Cameron Young had 10 kills. Iowa State recruit Jaiden Centeno had 48 digs and Bree Green had 57 assists and 20 digs.
#3 – Hastings gets win over surging Grand Island Northwest
In a triangular that involved Class B #5 Hastings, Grand Island Northwest and Beatrice, each team went 1-1. In the big match-up of the night, Hastings rallied for a 21-25, 25-20, 25-17 win over Northwest.
Hastings College recruit Cece Beahm had a match-high 16 kills for Hastings to go along with three aces 2 1/2 blocks and 10 digs. Dacey Sealey had 14 kills and 13 digs for the Tigers while Hope Kohmetscher had 33 assists and three ace serves. Kamri Adler added 21 digs and four aces.
For Northwest, Lindsey Sonnenfeld had eight kills and 3 1/2 blocks while Whitney Jensen had eight kills and 10 digs. Megan Cooper finished with 13 digs for the Vikings and Brynna Lewis had 17 assists.
#4 – Doniphan-Trumbull gets pair of quality victories in triangular
Ranked Class C-2 Doniphan-Trumbull came away from Tuesday’s nights triangular with Heartland and Giltner with a pair of wins. The Cardinals beat Giltner 25-20, 25-18 and beat Heartland 18-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Rhianna Wilhelm had 26 assists for Heartland while Kalea Wetjen had 10 kills and 10 digs and Olivia Casper had four ace serves.
#5 – Johnson-Brock FINALLY gets sweep of Freeman
There is probably no way of knowing for sure, but the potential exists that the Johnson-Brock and Freeman match was technically one of the longest in state history.
The match started on Sept. 20, but the power went out due to a major storm with Johnson-Brock ahead 20-18 in the second set. That forced a very rare suspension of a volleyball match and it resumed last night, where the Eagles wound up taking a 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 victory in a match that – technically – lasted about 288 hours.
Husker recruit Fallon Stutheit finished with 18 kills for Johnson-Brock while Kayla Haynes had 15 for Freeman.
