Lake City made easy work of the St. Charles volleyball team in their match leading up to the section title winning in 3 sets. Meanwhile, Kasson had to beat out Stewartville. On paper, the match-up looked to easily favor the powerhouse that Kasson has become, but Lake City was set on making history. Afterall, they had not taken a set from Kasson in the previous match-up and had even struggled with Red Wing.
The young team seemed ready for the challenge Saturday. Their youth and coaching were their strengths. The talented sophomore class was not intimidated by Petyon Seuss and her squad, but rather they seemed charged up as they warmed up for on the of their program’s biggest games. They showed true grit in the second set when they narrowly won 27-25. The third was when Kasson gained momentum but then the Tigers battled the best they could only losing the 4th set 24-26.
This display of heart and determination is a true testament to the coaches Lake City. The nearly all male coaching staff was able to get their players to buy into the idea that they were a group that could make history and lead to a legacy for the program. They lead by example: showing good sportsmanship, building personal relationships with players, and setting expectations high. Kirk Thorton, head coach, never appears rattled, rarely questions calls but instead seems to focus on the possibility of how great his team can be.
Even after the loss on Saturday, the team’s Facebook page seems optimistic for the future and with a great young team, there’s no doubt they will have their chance at “history” again.
