If the right side blocker sets a strong block and a middle blocker closes, your “go-to” is faced with a wall that makes their defensive back court’s life so much easier. If both blockers are sealing the net and pressing back into the court, it can really rattle a hitter. Here are some of the top right side blockers I’ve gotten to see over the past 45 days to start the season.
Alyssa Gaeth – 2022 – Kettle Moraine Lutheran – Wisconsin Premier 15 Teal
Gaeth gives teams trouble with her height and long reach. She does a nice job sealing the net and timing her jump. Gaeth can also take swings down the line or hard cross court.
Josie HalbeibJosie Halbeib – 2021 – 6’2 – Sun Prairie – Capital 16 Adidas
Halbeib is athletic and tall, with great footwork as well. She creates a wall in front of most teams’ “go-to” hitter. Halbeib is a strong swing and a smart, efficient distributor while running a 6-2.
Katie Winkler – 2021 – 6’0 – East Troy – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Winkler is built strong and solid, and she elevates. Then to make her even more lethal, she is a hard- hitting lefty. Winkler has improved so much in the last year, and she doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
Lydia Helle – 2021 – 6’0 – Madison Memorial – Capital 16 Adidas
Helle has really good timing and spacing when setting the block. She can also turn around and take a nice hard swing. She rounds out a scary trio for Capital on the right side.
Olivia Lamont – 2021 – 5’8 – Whitefish Bay – Wisconsin Premier 16
Lamont sets a solid block and presses the ball back into the court. She plays so much bigger than her actual height and creates a lot of problems for opposing hitters. Lamont is also very good at using the opposing blocker when she takes a swing.
Rylie Gregg – 2021 – Divine Savior Holy Angels – Midwest Penguins 16 Black
Gregg does a great job putting the ball away. On the defensive side of her game, she sets a strong block and can be a force to reckon with. She should potentially see some decent playing time for DSHA in 2019 after losing some big blockers to graduation.
Sheridan SwiderskiSheridan Swiderski – 2021 – 5’10 – Mosinee – Wisconsin Ice 16 Purple
Swiderski works hard on the right side and hustles through each play. She has a high contact point and is an intimidating block to go up against. She has natural timing and instinct when blocking and presses the ball back into the court.
Sydney Lewellin – 2022 – 5’10 – Lake Mills – Capital 16 Adidas
Lewellin is a solid all-around athlete. She is built solid and strong and creates such a great combination with Halbeib. She plays bigger than 5’10, and with the height of the hitters around her, Capital can be quite intimidating.
Zoee Pond– 2021 – 5’9 – Monroe – Capital 16 Navy
Pond is another lefty that has great timing on the right side. She is a little undersized, but she elevates and seals the net well. When you watch Pond, you realize she never “dogs” a play, but instead works hard all the way through every rally.
