Continue ReadingDead Frog and Michigan Volleyball Academy made their way to the other side of the Lake this past weekend to take on some of the top teams out of Wisconsin and Minnesota in the JVA Jamboree in Milwaukee. MVA brought quite the army of teams, some competing deep into Sunday with key matches late in bracket play against some of the top clubs in the region. Dead Frog had flashes of great taking a set off FC Elite in 16s who went on to win the 16 Open Championship and the 18s competing against the likes of Minnesota Select, Milwaukee Sting, and FC Elite who have multiple Division 1 players. Here are just a few names from the weekend to note that made their mark in Milwaukee.
MVA going for the block against Milwaukee Sting.Mackenzie Gross – Outside Hitter – MVA 16 National
The Class of 2021 outside hitter was among the most physical in the tournament at 6’1 with an extremely high contact point. She had the power and heavy swing to go through the block or tool the block to score points. MVA had a really tough pool with some perennial power in two Milwaukee Sting teams with the 15 Gold who will be one of the tops in Wisconsin and Milwaukee Sting 16 White which featured three athletes 6’2 or taller. Gross definitely stood out as one of the top outsides to watch throughout the whole tournament.
Sophie Plate – Outside Hitter – MVA 16 National
Gross and Plate make quite the 1-2 punch for MVA. Plate stands at 5’11 and is pretty creative with how she can use her shot selection to score points. Plate is highly effective using the high hands and can swing from either side of the pin. Even though Saturday did not go as planned for MVA National they came back to win the Silver Division on Sunday against their other 16s team in MVA 16 Elite.
Dead Frog 16 BlackOlivia Ott – Outside Hitter – Dead Frog 16 Black
Ott was able to score points in big time situations from the outside for the Dead Frog 16s team who came into their pool as the three seed and advanced to Gold pool play for Sunday knocking off RVA out of the Milwaukee area, winning 17-15 in the third. They were also able to go to three sets with the overall winner, giving FC Elite out of Appleton, WI a three set battle.
Julia Bouma – Libero – MVA 16 National
Bouma is extremely efficient with her movement and platform as a libero covering a huge range. Not only was her passing on point, but she was highly effective picking up tips and making a lot of nothing into something. Some of the best liberos go unnoticed because they make everything look easy. Bouma is able to make the difficult plays look routine Saturday.
Ryann Jaqua – Outside Hitter – Dead Frog 18 Black
Committed To Toledo
Jaqua is an absolute high flyer, she can play all the way around and can really find a way to score points. She can swing hard cross or roll over the block, and can be flat out electrifying. Dead Frog 18 rolled through pool play and dropped a tough three set match to MN Select 17-1 who has multiple Division 1 players. Despite an early loss in Gold pool play, Dead Frog was definitely one of the top teams in the 18s division.
Lindsey Barry – Libero – Dead Frog 18 Black
Committed To Cornerstone
Barry will be taking her backrow strengths to NAIA and Cornerstone University. She came up big when having to defend the heavy swings of MN Select and was able to serve receive on point to get Dead Frog into system. Dead Frog is balanced all the way around with solid all around players, but Barry is tops when it comes to commanding the back court.
Avya Kooistra – Middle Blocker – MVA 17 National Black
Kooistra has quite the presence in the middle at 6’1 and touching nearly ten feet. She can move from pin to pin to close the block and really cause a mismatch by altering the shots of the opposing team. MVA has some dominant blockers on the pin which really can create some solid mismatches. Kooistra will definitely be on the radar once Presidents Day comes around and Division 1 coaches can be out to evaluate, she would be a solid pick up as a middle blocker or even right side.
Addie Vanderweide – Outside Hitter – MVA 17 National Black
Vanderweide has been on the radar for a while as a dominant pin for MVA and Grand Rapids Christian (where she is a teammate of Kooistra for both). A physical attacker who can play on either pin as well as backrow will have plenty of options to choose from once her high school and club career is over. MVA dropped a tough first match against One Wisconsin, but came back to beat them to eventually finish runner up in the 17s division.
