FC Elite, Milwaukee Sting, and One Wisconsin are the only teams from the Badger Region that have entered teams in the Open Division. This tournament is FULL of quality potential college players at each age level. There is a lot of available talent in the 2021 class. Here is a quick look at the top contenders from the Badger Region.
McKenna WuchererMilwaukee Sting 16 Gold – AES National Rank #10
This group seemed to have a slow start to their season, but they have just gotten better and better as the season goes on! They recently received a USA Open bid, which would be hard to turn down, so it should be interesting to see whether they end up attending both USAV and AAU Nationals. This year’s 16 Gold squad features some of the top prospects in the state, including future college teammates McKenna Wucherer (2022 – Committed To Minnesota) and Emme Bullis (2021 – Committed To Minnesota). Wucherer is very fast and athletic at 6’2, but Mariah Grunze (2021 – 6’1 – Outside Hitter – Waterford) has been working her way up the ranks. Kaitlyn Riley (2021 – 6’1 – Middle Blocker – Catholic Memorial) is absolutely dominating in the middle and on every radar you can find right now.
Amanda VielMilwaukee Sting 16 Black – AES National Rank #34
Sting is known for fielding 3-4 solid teams at each age level, and this team is no exception. They’ve already won the 16 Premier Division of the Central Zone Invitational and the 16 Open Division of the Badger Region Championships. They have a number of players on their roster that competed at the Resch Center in November as young sophomores, one being Kaitlyn Bingham (2021 – 5’9 – Outside Hitter – Oconomowoc) made a name for herself this fall helping the Raccoons to the State Championship match. She is an athlete who elevates and is a gritty competitor. Bingham is no stranger to Sting teammate, Amanda Viel (2021 – Libero – Burlington), who was a key piece for Burlington’s win over Oconomowoc for the Division 1 state title.
Cora BehnkeFC Elite 16 Navy – AES National Rank #36
FC Elite had a really hot start to their season, including winning 16 Open Division of the Juniors Winter Classic and the JVA MKE Jamboree, as well as winning the Badger Region Qualifier. Elite has a couple of highly recruited players as well, including Cora Behnke (2021 – 6’0 – Oconto) as well as Hattie Bray (2021 – 6’1 – Middle Blocker – Wautoma). This squad is solid on so many levels, and they should be top contenders for this highly competitive national tournament.
One Wisconsin 16-1 – AES National Ranks #202
This team has gotten better and better each time they step on the court to compete. Their most recent routing landed them a 3rd place finish in the 16 Open Division of the Badger Region Championships. This squad is led by standout Avery Torrey (2021 – 6’2 – Setter/Middle Blocker – Kaukauna), who is a 6-rotation player who doesn’t get much of a break. Their back court is anchored by Grace Demetrician (2021 – Libero – Appleton North), who is solid in serve-receive and scrappy on defense.
