Setters Who Impressed At The Mizuno Showcase
The Mizuno Showcase is an awesome opportunity for players to show a plethora of college coaches at every level what they can do. The competition is fierce with three days of strong competition. Setters from four different regions impressed at every level. They were running 5-1s, 6-2s, and running fast paced offenses. I typically keep a closer eye on those from the Badger Region, but there were some pretty impressive setters from other regions that I just had to mention!
Claire Chier – 2020 – 6’3 – Lourdes Academy – One Wisconsin 17-1
Chier really stood out because she is a really tall setter and it gives her an advantage when playing a tight pass. Then you notice how smooth her hands are and how difficult she is to read. This makes Chier frustrating to defend and makes her a key piece to her team.
Drew Danner – CIS 16W (IA)
Danner is a setter with decent height and a great volleyball IQ. She is a solid athlete and defender while running a 5-1. Danner has really good ball control and smooth distribution.
Emily SchliesmanEmily Schliesman – 2020 – 5’8 – Beaver Dam – One Wisconsin 17 Elite
Schliesman is, in one word, smart. Her volleyball IQ gives her a huge advantage as a setter. Schliesman understands when to speed up, slow down, dump, and does it all proficiently and effortlessly.
Grace Gilles – 2019 – Wisconsin Ice 18 National – Committed To Sioux Falls
Gilles is such a solid all-around athlete. She is super scrappy on defense, has a lethal serve, and is an extremely smart setter. She makes smooth transitions, great decisions, and accurately distributes the ball. Gilles is a solid leader for her squad and runs an efficient 5-1 offense. She is undersized but puts up a fight in the front row.
Isabelle Coon – 2022 – St. Mary’s Springs – Fond du Lac Fusion 17 Purple
Coon moves well and has impressive control when setting. Her ability to reliably put the ball where it needs to be while playing up 2 age levels is impressive. Coon rarely makes ballhandling errors and has a strong serve to take teams out of system. Her high contact and smooth hands increase her range making her hard to read and her hitters difficult to defend against.
Jordan Hein – 2020 – Smiley (MN) – Vhawk Xtreme 17 Adidas
Hein runs an efficient offense and is a leader on her team. She is a motivator and a spark plug. Hein is a bit undersized, but her jump setting is on point, she makes smart choices to find hot hands, and can move the ball from pin to pin.
Katelyn Leffler – 2021 – Hamilton – Motion 16 Blue
Leffler has a lot of potential, and she gets taller every time we see her. She has nice hands and solid ball control. She makes calculated decisions and betters the ball. Leffler will be fun to watch as she continues to develop.
Sam MillerSam Miller – 2020 – 5’9 – Waunakee – Capital 17 Navy
Miller has a clear personal connection with each hitter, and it shows when she plays. She knows how to communicate with each one and leads each one with her sets. Miller does a nice job pushing the ball pin to pin. She is a fantastic distributor who finds her hot hands and sets up a solid block while running a 5-1.
Taylor Birr – 2020 – Pulaski – One Wisconsin 17-1
Birr is a gritty, strong defender. She covers the court well, has solid ball control and is a strong leader on her team. Birr sparks her squad through her play, where she gives it all she’s got. She has nice hands and is a strong communicator.
