Continue ReadingWhen 5’9″ right handed sophomore middle Brooke Bannister is not working on her cattle for 4-H or her pig project for FFA, you can find her on the volleyball or basketball court and track. Bannister emerged this past year as a leader on the young High Plains Storm floor. She had 43 service aces and 41 ace blocks to go along with her 136 kills this past season. As she became the Storm’s go to player her confidence at the net continued to grow. Bannister is a typical small school three sport athlete as she also had two double-doubles in basketball this past winter and competes in multiple track and field events for the Storm.
Brooke is looking to attend a two year college and play volleyball. Her goals are to keep improving as a six rotation player and continue to improve on serve receive. She also has really been working on her jump float serve for next year. Brooke said that there were high expectations for her despite being only a sophomore.
“I am the one who is calm under pressure, I can make others laugh and I tend to let things go and not bother me,” Bannister said.
Those skills are crucial in young player’s development and many times those are intangibles that cannot be coached. She commented on how next year she wants to be a player that the underclassman look up to. She wants to continue to be that go to player for that final point of the game whether it is a great dig, block or kill.
The Storm will return all but one senior next year, so Brooke is hungry for this coming fall to beat some conference foes and improve as a leader on the team. Brooke’s coach Rachel Hermansen says that one of her greatest strengths is that her work ethic is top notch. Brooke is a player that will constantly stay after practice to work on specific skills or to help her teammates out. Coach Hermansen said that Bannister is a leader by example, despite her quiet nature. Brooke hopes to continue to make more of an impact all around this fall as well and be that go-to person Coach Hermansen has envisioned for her sophomore.
Brooke is looking forward to continually improving in the weight room and continually pushing herself at camps this summer. Brooke is a great small school athlete looking to pursue a degree in agriculture and continue to playing volleyball for a two year school. Keep her on your radar!
