For many of these athletes they have been competing since the time their knee pads covered up their whole legs, they’ve sacrificed social gatherings with friends, persevered through tough losses, and celebrated the wins. For the 18s this weekend, its their chance to take the court one last time in Dallas for the USAV 18s Nationals. Here is a quick glance of where the Iowa teams stack up in the field.
18 Open
Iowa PowerPlex is accustomed to being one of the top teams at every tournament they attend and a team loaded with future college stars, the national tournament will be just like any other for these athletes. Plex is the two seed in Pool 6 with an overall 11 seed out of 36 teams. This team has been special over the past couple years, making back to back USAV Open appearances. Ankeny Centennial’s trio of Mckenna Sauer (Missouri), Arin Winters (Denver), and Devyn Robinson (Wisconsin – 2020 grad) have been together all year round playing high school and club together. There have been some new additions this year which include Megan Renner, the best setter in the state who is heading to Purdue along with Haley Bush (Drake), Aimee Adams (South Dakota), and Kaylee Donner (Northern Iowa). The top team heading into the tournament will be Legacy out of the Detroit area. This team has gone 6 for 6 in major tournaments throughout the country this season.
18 National
Adrenaline was the Iowa Regional winner and will be competing in the National Division in Dallas this weekend. They are the 5th seed in their pool which is highly competitive with Rancho Valley 18 Premier out of Southern California as the one seed. This squad has had quite the crew from Cedar Rapids playing together that includes Maddy Baxter (Drake), Sydney Kloubec (Indian Hills), and Akeela Jefferson (South Dakota State). Grace Tubbs will be heading to Iowa next year where she has been committed since her Freshman year. Sommer Daniel (Utah), one of the best all around players in the state has made a huge impact for this team on the right side and is a setter as well.
18 American/Patriot
Six Pack waited until the last qualifier to punch their ticket to nationals with a bid from MEQ. A team that has been bugged by injuries and plenty of athletes who play in multiple sports, a full team makes a huge difference with some of the best athletes in Northeast Iowa. They will be joined by three other Iowa teams in Platform Elite 18 Adidas, Flight 18u, and CIA 18 Black. Iowa Rockets 18R will be competing in the Patriot Division as the overall 17th seed.
