Continue ReadingMany high schools and club teams will be transitioning this year with the number of great setters graduating in 2019. Thankfully coaches have seen it coming and have been thoughtfully preparing their next court leader. The 2020 class has a number of talented players at all class levels. Here’s a close look at five top setters eager to run the court as a upcoming senior.
Emma Martinson is a 5’10 setter from Eden Prairie. She contributed in every way last year for her high school team with approximately 20 service aces, 37 total blocks, and over 900 set assists. It’s easy to see why she was picked for the Vital 18-1 Gold team. With an infectious attitude and refined skills she would be a excellent addition to any program.
Payton Marker is slightly shorter than some college setters but her skills are big. At 5’7” she can effectively run a 6-2 offense or be used as a defensive specialist Shakopee High school has provided her with top notch coaches and a winning mindset. She is recognized in the top 100 recruits for the class of 2020. Payton is on the MN Northern Lights 17-Red team again proving she has the work ethic of a champion. See for yourself in her effortless highlight video.
It is clear DonnaMae Smith wants nothing more than to continue being a college athlete. The 5’6” Moose Lake-Willow River setter is a complete package: National Honor Society member, had over 500 set assists last year, consistent server-9 errors during the 2018 season, and a recipient of the President’s Education Award. Smith is currently on the MN North 17-1 team.
At 6′ Logan Sherman can easily play all 6 rotations: setting in the back row and hitting while in front. She is a fixture for the Marshall volleyball and hockey team. Sherman was all conference last year and has been getting noticed for awhile having made PrepDig.com’s watch list. SWMNVB has her setting and hitting on the right for their 17-1’s team. Sherman is a player that a college could really take and mold into anything: she has the strength and height to be a middle or could be a left because of the sharp, cross angles she can hit.
While the Rochester Mayo Spartans haven’t had the best record the last few seasons, they have had one of the most talented setters in the Big 9 conference: Kelly Klees. At 5’10” Klees’ best trait is her accuracy. She is able to get the right tempo on each set. Currently she is setting for Southern Minnesota Volleyball 18-1’s that has a several Division I and II athletes. They recently took 5th place in the JVA World Classic. Klees has elevated her game this year and would be a great candidate for a program looking to add a precise, intelligent setter to their line-up.
