Prep Dig has taken a quick look at all the Iowa Girls Region teams who will be in action this weekend, with one final look at the Girls Youth National Team which is comprised of athletes heading into their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year of high school – born in the year 2002 or 2003.
Emma Schubert – Iowa Select – Davenport Assumption
Schubert brings in state tournament experience as an outside hitter at Assumption. After a big club season for Iowa Select 16 Mizuno, Schubert has established herself as a top outside hitter in the Class of 2021. An aggressive swing, a knack for scoring points, and a six rotation player will be key heading into the tournament.
Abby Staun – Central Iowa Select – Dowling Catholic
Staun and Myah Shipley were on the CIS 15M squad that qualified for 15 Open for the USAV Nationals in Indianpolis a few weeks ago. Staun will be an option as a DS/Libero as well as a serving specialist where she can step up and perform in key situations.
Myah Shipley – Central Iowa Select – Southeast Polk
Myah Shipley of CISShipley had a breakout year for SEP and then carried that momentum right into the club season. Long, athletic, and such an upside to her game as a middle blocker or could even play on the right side. Her versatility and athleticism really allows her to contribute in multiple ways.
Alysen Dexter – Ohaha – Des Moines Christian
Dexter is a pure pin/outside hitter who is very solid in all six rotations. She has the court vision to see where the open spots are and can hit a variety of shots. Dexter will be heading into her Junior year at Des Moines Christian and will be a big threat on the high school scene this season.
Reese Martin – Flight – Independence
Martin brings in a lot of big match experience having a breakout year for Independence where they advanced to the Class 4A state tournament. She will be the top returning blocker for the Mustangs and could have the potential to contribute in any front row position.
Natalie Welch – Eastern Iowa Xtreme – Mount Vernon
Welch is a late addition to this squad and is a HUGE pick up for this team. Welch is asserting herself as a really strong recruit coming out of the Class of 2021. As a part of the EIX 17 Teal Team that won the 17 National Title in the National Division at USAV, Welch can be used as a middle or right side. Major physicality at the net that will create a big time presence as a point scorer and defender.
Rachel Brockney – Iowa Power Plex – Urbandale
Brockney is a major swiss army knife out of the front row where she can play on either pin and be used insystem to come out of the middle. A lot of energy to bring to the court, Brockney will be a big time player for Urbandale this fall and can contribute in a variety of ways for Iowa this weekend.
Taylor Grinley – CIA – Gilbert (Title Photo)
Grinley will be running the show as a setter for this squad after a strong season for CIA 16 Black. The Junior to be knows how to command a 5-1 offense and for a day at the Iowa Regionals, Grinley was blocking out of the middle and transitioning to setter. She can put a strong block up, attack, and put a hittable ball for her hitters to terminate.
Hailey Cavan – Iowa Heart – South Hamilton
Cavan is one of the stronger all around players in the Heart of Iowa Conference where she led the Hawks in kills and digs. At High Performance, international substitution rules are applied which are considerable less than club and high school. Having all around players like Cavan are extremely valuable where they can step in any situation and contribute with a swing or a strong serve and passing game.
