Continue ReadingThe Class of 2021 has been in the middle of all the various recruiting rule changes over the past couple years. From their 14s year of potentially talking with college coaches before even setting foot in high school to their 15s year when visiting college campuses and staffs on “Unofficial Visits” became a little murky, to this past year when communication was halted from May 1 to June 15. With camps in full swing throughout the summer, especially in July, athletes have gotten the chance to get on campus, work with the coaching staff, get to know potential incoming recruits and current athletes, and possibly make that decision as to where they will continue their education and volleyball career. Here is the first wave of the Class of 2021 making their summer volleyball verbal commitments.
Abby Stark – Willmar – Kandi Elite – Libero
Abby Stark of Willmar High School.Committed to North Dakota State
Stark is one of the top liberos out of the Class of 2021 in Minnesota and North Dakota State is making their claim in getting top athletes out of the state. The Bison have three athletes from the Class of 2019 in Syra Tanchin (MN Select), Kelley Johnson (Northern Lights), and Ava Schmoll (Kokoro). In 2020 they will have two MN Select athletes in Allison Hinze and Taylor Quan as well as Alex Lyle (Kokoro). Stark is the second to commit in 2021 with Abby Moe from Northern Lights committing earlier this spring. Stark will be bringing with her an incredibly high volleyball IQ as a libero. She has been a standout for Willmar High School and Kandi Elite out of Willmar, playing up on the 17s team. Earlier this summer, Stark was able to set for the 18s team at AAU Nationals. An all around athlete, Stark is the type of player that will continue to add to the depth of NDSU to make a push in the Summit League which has been dominated by Denver and the conference tournament won last year by South Dakota.
Kiya Durant – Robbinsdale Armstrong – Crossfire – Middle Hitter
Committed to Minnesota State-Mankato
Durant is strong, physical, and will be quite the presence in the NSIC as a middle hitter as she has chosen to continue her education and volleyball career at Minnesota State-Mankato. A Junior to be at Robbinsdale-Armstrong and a go to player for Crossfire, Durant first jumped on the Prep Dig radar at the Big City Luau and continued to impress throughout the club season being able to hit a variety of tempos out of the middle, but is a really strong blocker who can get from pin to pin. She will be the part of the Class of 2021 recruiting class that includes Brooke Bolwerk, a standout setter from Appleton North (WI) and FC Elite, one of the top clubs out of Wisconsin who committed this spring to MSU.
