Premier 17 Gold came into the tournament as the #27 seed out of 36 teams, but promptly pulled two upsets in its first two matches to show it plans on celebrating the 4th of July with some fireworks of their own.
Premier 17 Gold made quick work of #15 seed Seal Beach 17s by a score of 25-18, 25-18 and followed that up with a 25-20, 25-22 sweep of #22 seed Skyhigh Adidas 17 Black. In its final match of the day, Premier 17 Gold finally had its string of upsets stopped with a 25-21, 18-25, 15-11 loss to #10 Triangle 17 Black.
The 2-1 record on the first day puts Premier 17 Gold in a tie with Triangle 17 Black for second in the pool. The only undefeated team in the six-team pool is Mintonette Sports m.71, which is 3-0 and the #3 overall seed. The top four teams in the pool after after two days of competition advances into the championship round of 24.
Premier 17 Gold will have two matches tomorrow, facing Mintonette at 7 a.m. CST in a match that could put Premier in a position to win the pool. The team then finishes the day with a 9 a.m. match against HPSTL 17 Royal, which is 1-2 and is seeded lower than Premier 17 Gold.
In the 17 American division, Premier 17 Black went 0-3 on the first day of pool competition, falling in three sets to IPVA 17 Black and in two sets to Alamo 17 Elite and NOVA Juniors 17 Navy.
