This past weekend wrapped up the summer season for some with the Central Team Camp which featured athletes from all across the state. Here is a quick breakdown of teams who competed and what the momentum they will be carrying into the high school season.
The last summer camp is always a great way for teams to start using different lineups and having potential combinations come together. This is a chance for new leaders to step up, the leaders who lead by example, and new faces to the varsity roster that can use to the pace of the game. However, for some athletes they might be taking a final family vacation after a summer full of club nationals, camps, possibly softball, and various other activities. Any nagging injuries or potential burnout is the last thing teams want when heading into the season where Day 1 it is so important to come in fresh mentally and physically.
WACO
WACO out of Wayland in Southeast Iowa came away as champions of the Scrimmage Camp held at the end of July. This season, WACO will be returning their top attacker in Morgan Graber and their leader in assists with Laney Graber. Their top returner in digs is also back with Aubrey Gamsey.
Glenwood
Glenwood was tops in the Competition Camp and will look to make some noise in Class 4A this season after being topped by Lewis Central in regional play to end 2018. They will be returning two of their top three attackers in Elle Scarborough and Joslyn Lewis. Jaeda Wilson will return as the top backcourt defender as well as two setters in Teryn Bertini and Grace Boles.
UA Teams
The UA Teams were comprised of athletes from different high schools, offering a chance to compete on the same team. The team was self guided and had to make their own lineups.
4 days, 72+ hours, 54 teams, 500 plus players and coaches, and thousands of “mine’s!”… what an amazing two team camps this year! Thank you to all that came out to Pella this summer and making our camps the best in years! Go compete hard this fall! #DutchFamily #DominateTheDay pic.twitter.com/PcejlzQnBr
